I was looking at the current Broadway season and could only count four musical revivals happening (Cabaret, Hedwig, Les Mis, and Violet). Two of them have never been on Broadway before, and the others were seen fairly recently.
How many nominations will there be then for Best Musical Revival at the Tony Awards?

Posted: 12/28/13 at 3:22pmThe nominating committee is given discretion to nominate as few as two shows so it's not as though all four revivals are guaranteed a nomination. There's also a chance (albeit it's seeming less and less likely) that another revival could be announced for this season.

It seems like a good possibility that the godawful Les Miserables 25th anniversary production could win by default.

Posted: 12/28/13 at 7:34pmYou are wrong, SidebySydebyLogan. The only eligibility requirement for the revival category is that the production hasn't been on Broadway in at least 3 years. Roundabout could put Cabaret on for limited runs every 3 years if they wanted to and it would be eligible each time.

PlayItAgain, here are the rules from last year:
http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/about/2013_Tony_Rules_Regulations_REV_FINAL_for_website.pdf
The rules on revival eligibility start at the bottom of page 9. Where in there does it state that the physical production must be different? Or is that a new rule for this season?

Posted: 12/28/13 at 11:20pmWasn't the 2006 revival of A Chorus Line basically a re-creation of the original production? That was nominated for Best Revival, so I don't see why the situation with Cabaret would be any different.

It only refers to how the individual elements shall be judged if they are duplicated.
The determination that a play or musical is ineligible in the category of Best Play or Best Musical shall not, in and of itself, make the play or musical eligible in a Best Revival category unless the play or musical also meets the requirements of this paragraph. Regardless of whether a production of a play or musical is eligible for a Best Revival category, the elements of the production shall be eligible in those categories in which said elements do not, in the judgment of the Tony Awards Administration Committee, substantially duplicate any prior presentation of the play or musical, except as prohibited by paragraph 2(l) of these Rules; provided, that the play or musical otherwise meets all the requirements set forth herein for Revivals.

Since "Violet" has been revamped somewhat, if the season ends up being lackluster, it could be nominated as Best Musical.
"Buried Child" was nominated for Best Play, some twenty years after it's debut under the same circumstances.

I doubt that they would be able to convince the nominating committee to consider Violet as a new musical, if Roundabout even wanted to. The show has been around the block a few too many times. It's not as if there have been zero productions of the show since the original run at Playwrights Horizons back in the 90s. While it hasn't achieved the popularity that something like Little Shop of Horrors achieved before it made its Broadway bow it is still pretty much a part of the theatrical canon now. I would even venture that the changes to the book (which seem to be mostly cuts to bring it down to a one act length, as opposed to massive rewrites to the text, plot, and characters) probably won't be substantial enough to justify it being eligible for Best Book the way some other revivals, such as Cinderella and Flower Drum Song, were.

Posted: 12/29/13 at 7:28pmSam Shepard made considerable revisions to BURIED CHILD for its Broadway debut. It wasn't because he wanted a Tony nomination, it was because like a case of literary pentimento, he changed his mind. If you compare the original version in SEVEN PLAYS with the published Broadway version you can't help but notice the differences.
