Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
#1Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
Posted: 8/27/09 at 7:10pmFigured this be a fun thread to look back on Oscar talk or buzz from the past that got it right or wrong for movie musicals. For instance I remember Phantom being a "lock" for Best Picture. But then again on then "they" did predict Jennifer Hudson would win for Dreamgirls and she did. Anyone else remember any?

Posted: 8/27/09 at 7:11pmDreamgirls not being nominated for best picture was a big shock.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 7:12pmI believe many people on here predicted Rent for best picture as well as Menzel and Dawson likely to get noms. I also recall The Producers being on potential best picture lists before anyone saw it.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 7:24pmThis is probably an unpopular opinion, but I am surprised RENT didn't get an oscar noms.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I am surprised RENT didn't get an oscar noms.
Why is that? The critical consensus was that it was less than mediocre and it was not exactly a box office sensation.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 7:28pmI get enjoying the film but even those who enjoyed it knew it wasn't going to get a single nomination.

Yeah before the movie came out, people were predicting that Rent would get a Best Picture nomination, and that Idina and company would get Best Actor/Actress nominations. Then the movie came out and killed any Oscar buzz it may have had.
It wasn't really a shock, but I kind of wanted either Hairspray or Sweeney Todd to get a Best Picture nomination, given that both were critical successes and there was good buzz surrounding both films.
I was shocked however, that Hairspray didn't a Best Song nomination given that Shaiman and Whitman wrote a couple new songs for the film.
Dreamgirls not getting a Best Picture nomination was also a surprise.

I agree. Hairspray should have gotten a nomination for Best Song. "Ladies Choice" and/or "Come So Far" were worthy of a nomination and I was surprised when they did not receive one.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 8:06pmI disliked the Dreamgirls movie, but what really shocked me was that they didn't win an Oscar for best song. They had 3 songs nominated - 3/5 nominations in that category! Beyonce's face was hilarious when they didn't win.

I think the reason they didn't win was that because they had 3 out of 5 nominations so there ended up being a split in the votes.
Also, wasn't Come So Far ultimately not used in the movie and only on the special features than the DVD?
#11re: Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
Posted: 8/27/09 at 8:11pmI think Come So Far plays over the end credits, but I'm not positive.
#12re: Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
Posted: 8/27/09 at 8:11pmCome So Far was used over the credits, I believe. All those songs from Enchanted being nominated was ridiculous. Out of them, I'd say only "That's How You Know" was worthy of a nomination.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 8:26pmIsn't there a rule about a song that's not in actual movie, ie credits, not being eligible?
#14re: Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
Posted: 8/27/09 at 8:38pm
Yeah, it's a fairly new rule, within the past few years. "My Heart Will Go On" (which won in 199
would not even be eligible for a nomination today since it only played during the end credits of TITANIC.

So much "buzz" that got it wrong over the years ...
Cher in Silkwood
Reds vs. On Golden Pond for Best Pic (the winner was Chariots of Fire)
A Place in the Sun vs. A Streetcar Named Desire (the winner was An American in Paris)
Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls
Early buzz for the recent Star Wars trilogy (boy, was THAT wrong)
Judy Garland in A Star is Born (the winner was Grace Kelly in The Country Girl----and this may still be the biggest upset in Oscar history, and the most embarrassing with all of the cameras outside Judy's room)

didn't chicago win for "i move on"? that was over the end credits...
#17re: Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
Posted: 8/27/09 at 9:14pmIt was nominated, but lost to Eminem's "Lose Yourself".

Well, that could be said for so many songs from the '70s until the rule was passed.
The Way We Were
It Goes Like It Goes
Theme from Arthur
At least the theme from Titanic played instrumentally throughout the movie. I mean a LOT.
I honestly, think the rule should be changed now. If the song plays as underscoring throughout the movie, and with lyrics over the end credits (or opening credits), it should be eligible. But if it's only tacked on at the end, and you've never heard the tune before in the movie ... No.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 9:20pm"lose yourself" played over the end credits... haha sorry to be annoying but the chords began as he walked down the street and then the credits began rolling as the song played.

Actually "The Way We Were" plays at the opening Besty and the melody is used heavily throughout.

besty, that was just one example.
Incidentally, didn't the Academy vote in June to make Best Song an occasional category? In other words, if there are no worthy songs that year then no award need be given? I think I recall reading an article about that around the same time they decided to add 5 extra nominees for Best Picture.

Posted: 8/27/09 at 10:01pmI was angry when Madonna was snubbed for Evita after walking away with a Goldon Globe and a ton of rave reviews, it was pure snobery, the same year Courtney Love was senstaional is the People Vs Larry.... was snubbed
#23re: Oscar Buzz That Got it Right (or wrong)
Posted: 8/27/09 at 10:18pmThe Madonna thing was ridiculous. I think if she had at least gotten a nomination she might have moved on to better roles in better films. I think she was disappointed because she put a lot of work into the film (not to mention begging for an audition) Well she did get to perform the OScar winning song that year.

StageManager, the Best Song category was rejiggered so the average score for a nominated song was raised again. And if no song reaches that average there will be no category for that particular year. The Academy also decided earlier that no film could be nominated more than twice for Best Original Song.
