Outer Critics Circle Announces 2004-05 Award Nominees — Page 4

The OCC and Drama Desk nominations ALWAYS (every single year) include shows that haven't opened yet. For shows opening late in the season, the nominating committee goes to early previews and bases its decisions on those. While some may say its unfair, it's better than making the shows ineligible and then holding them over for next season. Nominating them a year later almost guarantees they'll be forgotten and/or have practically no chance of winning.

The season deadlines are determined by the Tony Award cutoff date. Since the OCC and Drama Desks have to come out weeks before the Tonys are given out (in order for them to have any impact and for anyone to care), reviewing certain shows early in previews is a necessary evil.

Washington while not a HUGE role steals every scene he is in and is quite enjoyable and just has the personality that makes you want to root for him! Im keeping my fingers crossed he pulls out a Tony Nod!

Many people on this board are not in "the business," but have very astute opinions and observations. A photographer who sees every show on Broadway and off is certainly qualified as any of us, and some of us would be very qualified, to decide on theater awards.

Denis is leading actor? Was I the only one? I was sure he'd get a nom but I thought he'd be considered a supporting role.

I'm surprised he got one at all

I'm sure many people on the board are in "the business" (and temporarily unemployed or not yet starting rehearsals hence having the boring, irritated downtime to post. Or they're just well meaning egomaniacs checking out opinions of their own shows). The OCC is regarded as crap unless you've gotton nominated in which case it's viable, haha (though you know it's really crap). A nice party though, you wear nice clothes (this year at an Italian joint I think). Pillowman is the best play of the year (remember, the Pulitzer is only offered to an American play), Gem did indeed get hosed, Spelling Bee is far too sophisticated for those outer critics, Doubt is overrated, there's no guarantee that celeb photographers see much of anything besides the photo area at opening night and are certainly not authorities on acting, writing or directing, and I tend to believe the Lortels more than anything else. Including Drama Desk, the Tonys and Drama League.

And what makes Pillowman the best play of the year? The cobbling together of plot elements from Stuwelpeter, Fahrenheit 451, Brazil, Of Mice and Men and Man of La Mancha, perhaps?

how in the world did Rachel York, LaChanze and the rest of the Dessa Rose cast not get nominations? *shakes head furiously* at least they got the best musu=ical nom., but still...
