Yeah Memphis.
Ah, how I love award season! My favorite is when the OCC nominations come out first and everyone starts throwing a fit thinking that the Tonys will match these nominations.
Sorry Eug, I don't agree that the leading male in a play category is star-stuffed. Having seen all of those performances, I can tell you that all of those nominations are deserved (save maybe Liev, who I didn't enjoy though everyone else did).

Why are there set, costume and lighting design awards but not anything for sound design? The Tony's sorted this out a few years ago, shouldn't the OCC follow suit? Some strange nominations for sure.

Forget Cass Morgan and the American Idiot snubs. I'm still reeling from the idea that the curdled, overstaged MESS that was "The Tin Pan Alley Rag" was nominated for ANY award, much less BEST MUSICAL.
Whoops.

Outer Critics are usually off base....
Lets remember (although i loved Memphis and it will get nominated for Best Musical...Everyday Rapture is not a musical...sorry)
These are the people who gave
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang like 5 noms and Mary Poppins 12 !
Put it in perspective..

Chads, if you hated 'Memphis' or don't believe it deserves any nominations, you're welcome to that opinion. I'm not gonna debate taste, because that's a subjective thing.
But ... the notion that 'IT IS NOT LIKED BY THE MAJORITY OF THE PRESS' is just factually wrong. I've already cited a number of publications that gave 'Memphis' rave reviews. And the Web site of Stage Grade has tallied 22 reviews of the show, and has concluded that its average grade was a B.
That said, the CRITICS who voted on the Outer CRITICS Circle nominations DID LIKE IT. Heck, more than liked it; they gave it more nominations than any other musical. But that's just one group. Maybe the Drama Desk on Monday will go another way. And the Tonys yet another. It's all a matter of perspective.
Ragtime absolutely deserved a nomination. I'm glad Steggert got the nomination, though.
I was mixed on American Idiot as a whole, but I would've liked to see Vincent or Esper nominated for best supporting.

First, the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama Desk nominations reflect the tastes of its nominators, who are mostly critics. Their nominations are meant to reflect them, not second-guess what will or won't be nominated by the Tonys. Second, the OCC and Drama Desk cover Broadway AND Off-Broadway, so there's no way their nominations will match the Tonys, which are exclusively Broadway. Also, only 7 nominators do the picking for the Drama Desk; about 10, for the Outer Critics; the Tonys use a larger nominating committee (about a couple dozen of theater pros and arts execs; almost no press). Those are just some reasons why the nominations can vary so wildly.
