These nominations are always out there. They're kind of amusing, really. As always, the "Outer Space" awards, indeed.
ETA: I assume the off-Broadway incarnation of Everyday Rapture was eligible last year, no?

I am glad for Memphis. I really enjoyed the production. I am a little shocked that Twyla didn't get nominated and JGjr for Idiot.
Enron was eligible...

I'm surprised Brian d'Arcy James did not get a nomination for "Time Stands Still."
At least they didn't nominate BYE BYE BIRDIE in any categories...I'm very happy about that.
Marin Ireland deserves to win in her category - her performance in A LIE OF THE MIND was one of the best I've seen all year. Just outstanding.
So Enron was eligible and got zero nominations? A total snub? Not even Norbert?
Norbert doesn't deserve to be nominated for ENRON (and neither does the play itself). I'm happy with the ENRON snub, since I didn't enjoy the production at all.
yay Katie Finneran and Kate Baldwin!
boooo for Ragtime! WTF!?!? I mean REALLY they did PP and not Ragtime! I mean what!?
Didn't Shrek lead the nominees last year?
Just saying.
Overall, I am actually really pleased with these nominations. There are definitely some strange ones, but the people/shows who really deserved to be nominated were (Finian's, Kate, Chris, Terri). Also, SNUB FOR TWYLA! Oh snap! Suck it, Isherwood.
WHy do you all think Steggert didn't get a nod for YANK? Everyone was saying how his performance was worthy of a Tony WIN.
Holy crap. I just noticed... NO VALERIE HARPER! Please let this be an indication of Laura Linney's Tony chances.

'Billy Elliot' AND 'Shrek' tied for the most nominations last year with 10 at the Outer Critics Circle.
For what it's worth, a number of last year's OCC winners went on to win the Tonys: 'God of Carnage' for play; 'Billy Elliot' for musical; 'Norman Conquests' for play revival; 'Hair' for musical revival; Geoffrey Rush for Actor in a Play; Marcia Gay Harden for Actress in a Play; Stephen Daldry for Director of a Musical; Peter Darling for Choreography. Just saying ...
Like any nominations, they're subjective. If you agree with them, you like them. If you don't, you make fun of them.
Why is Broadway musical the only show category with 5 nominees?
Does that mean they purposely snubbed Ragtime?

It's usually 4. They probably had a tie situation.

Cass Morgan? Chad Kimball? Bebe Neuwirth? 2 nominations for American Idiot, which will win Best Musical? The f***ing TIN PAN ALLEY RAG for Best Musical, which is neither a musical nor the best anything?
LOLWUT
The Off-Broadway production of Everyday Rapture opened in May of 2009 so it would be considered as part of this season.

Shouldn't Fela have been eligible last season? Why is it included as part of the current one?

What's curious about the Broadway Musical category is that 'Come Fly Away' must've barely tied for the fourth slot because it isn't anywhere else on the ballot - not even for Twyla Tharp. (And I really applaud their choices for choreography: 'Promises,' 'Fela!,' 'Memphis' and 'Scottboro.')

I know I haven't been paying attention this season but...
these are a joke, right?

How does one barely tie? Isn't a tie a tie? Maybe it was a 3 way tie...or a 5 way tie....

Lol. I was just thinking that.
While its an honor to be nominated and to win, I NEVER take these Outer Space awards seriously. Two words to support my case: Young Frankenstein
That said, here are some basic thoughts:
- Great that so many gay-themed shows were nominated
- The Best Actor in a Play category is a Hollywood-stuffed joke
- Sin that Memphis wasnt nominated for Best Costumes
- Terrific that Noah was acknowledged for his Brighton Beach work

I'm not sure how the Best Actor in a Play category is a 'Hollywood-stuffed joke.' Law, Schreiber, Walken and Washington have all been on Broadway before; Washington excepted, the other three have been Tony nominees or winners. If the Outer Critics nominators are so starstruck, why did they include Bill Heck? Surely, they could've swapped him out for even bigger movie stars like Daniel Craig or Hugh Jackman. Frankly, I was rooting for Hugh Dancy and Ben Whishaw, each with film & stage credits, for their work on 'The Pride,' but I can only assume they got squeezed out in a very competitive field.

really don't understand these choices. Twyla should have got at least a nomination for choreography, its an all dance show and people are coming to see it according to the Box Office Grosses, CFA even made more money than American Idiot. But, Addams Family is raking in the dough and will most likely be subbed more than anything. Seems like these Outer Space Awards are to fill in the gaps that will be left off of the list of the other award nominations.
