I would love to be there when she tells someone to quit it. I think if/when it happens there will be a monumental apaluse.

As much as Patti can grate on me with her tirades, she is right on this one. I couldn't agree more. Eating at live theatre is wrong on so many levels.
Of course the higher ups are going to defend it-they make a buck. The actors and patrons are the ones who suffer.

Love ya Patti! One quote suprised me though :"LuPone said that if she returns to Broadway, "I'll sit down with the producers and ask them to ask people to please stop eating. If you're hungry, don't come to the theater!'
...if she comes back?!

As much as we might think it, the reality is that Miss LuPone doesn't get to decide if and when she comes back to Broadway. So, I think, it's appropriate that she uses "if" in this instance.

the nederlander executive's defense -- we're responding to evolving standards of ettiquette -- was hollow even for a theatre owner.
first of all, whatever else you want to say about it, eating in the theater is producing the opposite of "evolution".
moreover, the notion that the theater is somehow passive ("responding") in all of this is appalling. it's YOUR frickin' theater -- you SET the standards, you dont follow them.
at least have the b*llz to call this what it is: a response to pressure on your bottom line ... or your top line ... or your alimony payments ... or whatever.
but, i have a bottom line, too, and i am no longer willing to pay $110 to listen to some fat slob from bergenfield who lacks the self-control to wait til intermission chow down on junk food. i weigh carefully a theater's policies and the show's likely audience before i plunk down my cash. i have already passed on three shows for this very reason.
oh, and i go to over 50 shows a year ... i wonder how many the slob from bergenfield schleps in for???

Posted: 1/26/07 at 4:35pmwhen i saw sweeney someone phone (5 or 6 times) was ringing and kept stopping and told them to answer it or turn it off, and the whole cast was mega pissed..... and rightfully so

Huh?
She probably turns down 5 roles a year.

I almost did not see "A Raisin in the Sun" because I knew the type of audience it would draw. But I went because I really wanted to see it. Got there and the cell phone cameras came out and the food, etc. At the performance I attended, they made an announcement at the beginning of the show and right before Act II. I had to stop the lady next to me from loudly rummaging through her purse after she and the 2 ladies next to her did the loud candy wrapper thing at the top of Act II. She turned to me and said...get this..."I want to file my nail down". I told her that it would be quite rude and that she was already disturbing those around her. We were second row center. She scowled but closed her purse.

Posted: 1/26/07 at 6:08pmI find it funny that people would WANT to drink wine out of a "spillproof cup." Do they not realize how bad that looks? Reminds me of a juice box...but for adults.
