Wouldn't it be fun if she got nominated for both MAMMA MIA! and DOUBT? Streep is one of those actresses that does a fun summer movie like PRADA and then goes on to get an Oscar nomination, I'm sure even she finds it quite funny.
I can't wait to watch her performance in DOUBT. I recently saw a top-notch production of this play and it is truly magnificent. I'm especially looking forward to the scenes between Amy Adams and Meryl Streep.
I love Meryl, but I wish the role would have gone to Cherry.
I honestly can't believe she wasn't allowed to document her performance in the film version. Especially after the dedication and commitment she gave to the play.
It is a damn shame that fine theatre actors, such as Cherry, don't get the chance to show off their acting chops in LEADING roles on the big screen due to box office names.
Meryl will be amazing and I can't wait to see the film. But to deny Cherry the film role of her lifetime, and the chance at an Oscar, after all the amazing work she has done in the theatre...it makes me sick. :)
It made Merman sick too.
And Channing.
And Fierstein.
Sad, but true.
But to deny Cherry the film role of her lifetime, and the chance at an Oscar, after all the amazing work she has done in the theatre...it makes me sick.
If Meryl Streep were not in the movie, it wouldn't have even created a blip on the Oscar folks' radar, amazing as the movie may have turned out to be.
The movie would have dropped in for a weekend, lost money, and be forgotten in an instant.
^
as much as i hate to say it, i agree with that
Glad Meryl is doing it since Cherry isn't. It is the casting of Hoffman that I am not crazy about. I really like him, but not for this part.
I agree, but I also feel that if they would have cast box office names in every other role, kept Cherry, released it in December, sent out the cast to do press, talk shows, etc. and marketed it as an Oscar worthy film it would have been just fine.
It is all in the marketing.
Cherry or no Cherry, Meryl o rno Meryl, I do not think this film will be any sort of awards contender. While this was an extremely driving and powerful 4 character play on a Broadway stage, I'm afraid it may just seem more slight on the big screen. With all the "opening up" and scenic expansion they'll have to do for film, I imagine it will be well-received, but will hardly be as powerful as the stage version. Though nothing is for sure, I see this film ending up more the way that 'Proof' did in movie theatres: mixed reception, quickly forgotten.
kyle., why so bitter?
Cherry Jones gave an interview a month or two ago where she said that she never expected to be cast in the movie, and that she's happy to see Shanley's work being brought to such a mass audience with such talented performers involved.
She's just fine about the whole ordeal. You should be too.
I think with PROOF it was different, this IS beating a dead horse, but Mary-Louise Parker with a modestly successful film career should have been up for the part, especially since she was so committed to the play from the second she learned about it despite what her agents told her.
Anyways, I'm glad Meryl was cast, I'm sure Cherry Jones was brilliant in the role but let's welcome a new interpretation of Sister Aloysius.
I just wish Hoffman had to drop out for scheduling conflicts or something of the sort, he is SOOOOO wrong for this role.
