PIPPIN is the Most Nominated Show of the Year

According to their Facebook page.

I think this is similar to what PETER & THE STARCATCHER did last year. Forgive me if I'm misremembering which show it was last year.

Oops.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

There's a thread over at All That Chat about it. If you count Tonys, Drama Desk, OCC and Drama League it did in fact receive more nominations than any show with 30 noms. Kinky Boots came in 2nd with 27 and Matilda with 26

That is how things like this are calculated and it's not an error. It doesn't say "Most TONY Nominated Show."

PIPPIN is the Most Nominated Show of the Year

I think STARCATCHER employed that kind of math, though I also recall them saying "the most nominated NEW play of the season" or something to that effect, which (if I recall) was correct.

I have no problem with PIPPIN's claim, actually, if the math backs them up. It's not an error, then. It's putting a good spin on the Awards Season.

Hell, CHICAGO proudly called itself "the longest-running revival of an American musical" for awhile, which is a little like calling CINDERELLA "the most-nominated new Rodgers + Hammerstein musical of the 21st century" or HANDS ON A HARDBODY "the most-nominated show this season set in Texas."

It's true. Whether it's worth touting is in the eyes of the beholder. I'll grant PIPPIN this claim, since it's certainly earned it.

I think they're saying it can work against a show, if it also loses that many nominations come awards night. Pippin is a terrible show and this just shows how far the Tonys have sunk.

There is no way in hell that this will "backfire" or "work against" the show.

How...? It got some of the best reviews of the season, it's selling extremely well, and it's not like people who see this aren't going to buy tickets because of it...

This is good marketing. Not bad.
