Passion DEFEATS The Lion King (March Madness, Round 2, game 13)

Well, I'm not a huge Sondheim fan at all ~ Into the Woods is about the only one I can listen to repeatedly. And I like The Lion King. I also like more classical stuff (Camelot, The Sound of Music, etc.) Rent, Next to Normal, Curtains, The Drowsy Chaperone, 110 in the Shade, Side Show (only from the cast recording...I sadly never got to see it), etc. And opera. And rock. And country. I'm way too eclectic to be pigeonholed into one type of music/show/whatever.
Granted we don't know each other, but there you go.

Well I totally appreciate your guys' opinions and I think that's great. I was honestly just curious if there were people that fell into that category.
And jordangirl, brava for not being pigeonholed... I think it's a little silly too, which is why I called it a "ridiculous specificity". I know you're a knowledgeable poster on this board, and I did not intend to be obnoxious. I just literally don't know a lot of people who happen to know Sondheim and like Disney.
I also have a lot of curiosity about musical theatre fans' reactions to The Lion King, because it was the first musical I ever saw on stage that I hated.

Did you seriously just group Rent and Next to Normal with Camelot and The Sound of Music as "classical stuff"?
The best past of The Lion King was the opening number. It was all downhill after that. I guess the same was true for Passion, but only because I got to see Marin Mazzie nekkid. I still listen to Passion all the time; The Lion King, maybe once a year.
Add one more vote for Passion, please.

Oh, sorry ourtime. I forgot to close the parentheses. I'll fix it.
Ok, thanks frenzy. was just a little confused. I'm a little hyper for some reason...going to try and sleep now. LOL.

PASSION - all the way.
There's no comparison, really. While TLK has great music and the staging was very innovative, Passion is a MASTERPIECE, no ifs or buts about it. At least in my book.

I love Sondheim and loathe Disney on stage, but Lion King is a superior all around show.
It comes down to Taymor's staging, and Passion isn't Sondheim's
best work by a long shot.
So - Lion King.

I'm a huge Sondheim fan, but I really like the Lion King (Disney's best).

although I am a huge Sondheim fan, Passion is my least favorite of the canon. this is not a Sondheim vs. Disney question.
The Lion King is a much better show.

Posted: 3/23/08 at 2:00amPassion, hands down. 12 years later and I still haven't forgiven The Lion King for beating Ragtime. I don't know that I ever will at this point.

Hmm, I really like both for really different reasons...
I guess I'll go with Passion though, as I relate more to Fosca than to Simba....take that as you will
