With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Posted: 3/22/08 at 11:19pmI would really like to know if there's anyone who would pick Disney over Sondheim, who IS familiar with the original productions of both musicals.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 11:22pmI have to go with The Lion King. Only because the character of Fosca really annoyed me in Passion. But I enjoyed the music.

If PASSION loses to THE LION KING, we can all stop wondering why things are headed downhill for Broadway.

"It is possible to be a musical theatre fan and NOT be a fan of Sondheim you know."
I totally know that. But I don't think I know anyone who is familiar with Sondheim that LIKES The Lion King, whether they love or hate Sondheim... if that makes sense? Anyone I know that is familiar with Sondheim likes him (and generally dislikes Disney musicals) or dislikes him (because they prefer A) mostly musical theatre pre- 1950ish, B) more of the Loesser/ Herman/ Schwartz style of musical tunesmithing, C) some other ridiculous specificity).
I've also only ever met 4 or 5 people who liked The Lion King, and I could name at least 100 friends who loved Passion.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 11:39pmPerhaps I spoke too soon...but it's not as if THE LION KING doesn't have ANY artistic merit. It's original conception and design is ASTOUNDING.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 11:41pmI may be one of the few, but I would chose this Disney show over this particular Sondheim.

You need to get out more. There a lot more fans of The Lion King than there are of Passion.
I love Sondheim, but in this case, THIS Disney show is better than THIS particular Sondheim.
