Well considering she was initially interested in playing Rose in the 1989 Revival and Laurents turned her down then, and now 19 years later when she's old enough to be June and Louise's grandmother, she's finally playing the role, I'd say it's a pretty accurate tagline.
"Winning a Tony this year is like winning Best Attendance in third grade: no one will care but the winner and their mom."

I love Patti LuPone but I've gotta say that Ethel, Angela, Tyne and Betty Buckley all impressed me much more than Patti did as Mama Rose.
I have seen Betty Buckley, Tyne Daly and Patti Lupone in Gypsy.
Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury I just know from their recordings.
ETA: Yes. I did leave out Bette Midler. on purpose.

How isn't it appropriate?
True, she's played the role twice in the past two years. But it was for a combined four weeks - and not broadway. If City Center hadn't happened (and most of you hadn't already now had a chance to see her performance, whether you liked it or not) I think the enthusiasm would be huge on this board. Like it was last June. I, for one, wasn't in town to catch her City Center run. So, I'm not thinking, "Oh, this is old news."
And considering both previous broadway revivals almost had her starring. I'd say, if one disregards the fact we just had a revival, etc (which, of course the producers would like you to), then Patti Lupone starring on Broadway in a production of Gypsy? "At Last".

I'm super excited for the revival, she tore the roof (or dome) off of City Center last summer, and I can't wait to see how the show transfers to the St. James. The more I think about it, the more appropriate "At Last" is becoming.

But exactly like Foster said, she's wanted this since the 1989 revival, and was banned from the role for like 17 years. And while she got to play it Ravinia and City Center, BUT now she's finally got to play it on Broadway.

Patti in all of her Patti-glory is deliciously over-the-top at times and it works beautifully. That's why her pairing with Mandy Patinkin worked so well.
