Edna- There is no reason why she (or the production in general) could not be nominated, as it has never played in NYC.
Theoretically, Patti LuPone would not be eligible for another Tony. An actor/actress cannot be nominated twice for the same role in the same show. Joel Grey was ineligible for the '87 CABARET revival, even though he was billed above the title the second time around -- he was eligible for the original production. Same with Yul Brynner and all seventeen revivals of THE KING AND I that he headlined.
Its official, Patti Lupone has been signed to lead the 2011 Broadway revival of Evita. Sir ALW just had a meeting with producers and they all agreed unanimously that casting her is the best decision they could've made. Surprisingly, La LuPone had been prepraring for this for over 30 years, she is said to wear Evita makeup and costume every day of her life. Photographer Andrew Gayle took a candid shot of her during her vacation off Gypsy.

What are you talking about? Evita most certainly played New York...Patti LuPone won the Tony for it.

This production that's supposedly coming to Broadway has never played Broadway.
Mattbrain summed it up, but I will repeat it. This is a PRODUCTION of a SHOW. There are revivals of shows brought to Broadway all the time, but they are (usually) new Productions.

If I remember correctly Lonette McKee was also deemed ineligible for the '94 revival of Show Boat since she had already played Julie, and been nominated, in the '83 revival.

My T-shirt says so.

Word on the street is that Susan Boyle is in negotiations to play Evita. She's just waiting to see if Tim Rice will accept her lyric changes.

You can't be nominated twice for the same role in the same show, no matter hwo different the production is or how many years apart they are.
Without that rule, Yul Brynner and Carol Channing would probably have half a dozen Tonys each.

"And Julie Andrew is miffed because they haven't offered her Eliza for the new film of "My Fair Lady." Dissed TWICE for the same part."
