the show is of course wild. Patti said Streisand is too old and not hungry for Gypsy, said she deserved the Tony over Joanna Gleason, wasn't happy Berdanette got Gypsy. and she had crabs 2 TIMES.
Can anyone point to the clip about Bernadette? Which one specifically? If I recall somewhat known that Patti wanted to do Gypsy with Sam Mendes so of course she would be disappointed if it fell through and went to Bernadette. But I’m curious if there is anything a bit more bitchy or arrogant.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Ok found it. It was the Sam Mendes story - she thought she was going to play it but it fell through and she read in the paper that Bernadette was going to do it. She tried following up with Mendes and got a 'cold note' that "Arthur wanted Bernadette" to play the part. She never actually saw Bernadette (or Tyne) play the role. If I recall, Bernadette has said in an interview she never saw Patti in the role either lol because it was 'too soon'.

It’s called Watch What Happens Live. The poster was referring to that, as many of these from now shows are indeed still recorded live.

The way she tells the story, it sounds like she's more mad at Mendes than Peters. As far as I can tell, she doesn't seem to place any blame on her for accepting. She probably didn't even know that Patti had been offered the role.
It’s the same with Glenn Close as far as I understand. When Glenn accepted Norma she likely didn’t know Patti was contracted for Broadway and then fired. Yet Patti still doesn’t seem to care for Glenn Close.

The “live” in the title is because the show originally airs live. Now they’re pre-recording the shows so they aren’t being broadcast “live” right now. People were upset she didn’t speak about Sunday’s Sondheim Tribute unaware she taped her WWHL late last week.

Wasn’t that the same production that was originally going to star Betty Buckley as Mama Rose? Then Buckley was cut for some reason if I recall.
Buckley did it at Papermill and Laurents tore her apart backstage telling her she won’t be playing the role again. I believe the story is that Sondheim also didn’t enjoy her Rose but didn’t berate her like Laurents, and was unhappy how Laurents treated her.

Betty tells the story that Sondheim told her that he did not like her arrangements of his songs on her CDs
