Performances that were not only denied a Tony nomination, but they should have WON that season. — Page 3
Posted: 8/17/06 at 9:51am
Linda Stephens should have been nom'd for the DAMN YANKEES revival.
Nathan Lane, Jean Smart and Harriet Harris should all have had noms for THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER. (Was it eligible?)
Sally Murphy should have been nom'd for both THE GRAPES OF WRATH and CAROUSEL.
You're saying that they all should have WON as well as been nominated? Re-read the title of the thread (copied below).
Edie Falco in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune
Megan Mullally in How To Succeed in Business...
Steven Sutcliffe in Ragtime
Lea DeLaria in On The Town
Betty Buckley in The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Laura Benanti in Nine
Judy Kuhn in Rags
Cyndi Lauper in The Threepenny Opera
This list could just go on and on, but I'll stop there.
You think Laura Benanti deserved to WIN a Tony for NINE over Jane Krakowski? Re-read the title of the thread (copied below).
Kingsley Leggs as Mister in The Color Purple
Eden Espinosa and Ramona Keller in Brooklyn
Daniel Reichard in Jersey Boys
Amy Spanger in The Wedding Singer
Sherie Rene Scott in Aida. Did not even know she was overlooked.
Eden Espinosa and Ramona Keller were both considered for the Featured Actress in a Musical category, therefore both of them could not have WON.
Re-read the title of the thread (below):
This was the initial post that started the thread, to get you caught up on the intended TOPIC:
What performances were not only denied a Tony nomination, but should have WON the Tony in their respective category that given season?
(Know your season and look at the nominees in the Tony Awards Database:)
https://www.broadwayworld.com/tonyawards.cfm
This thread is not about performances that were just denied a nomination. We already have 100+ threads on that topic.
This thread is about performances that not only should have been nominated, but should have won the Tony Award in that respective season, given the competition.

Actually, I would have given Mary Stuart Masterson the Tony for NINE over Krakowski, even though I thought Krakowski was wonderful. And yes, I thought Benanti was better than Jane, too. Jane won because she gave a flashy, sexy and most of all accessible performance in a show that many people found dense and depressing. However, she didn't come anywhere near expressing the depths of emotion that Benanti and Masterson presented.

This year I would have liked to have seen Matthew Saldivar and Drew Sarich nominated for best supporting actor.
(And, off-topic I know, but if you want to talk about egregiously overlooked, why wasn't Hugh Laurie nominated for an Emmy???)

Everyone...
If you even mentioned someone who you thought should have received a nomination -- but not necessarily a win -- you'll be reprimanded!
If we had 100+ posts similar to this one, but without the "should have won" stipulation, why even bother starting it in the first place?
Again, not all of us read every topic or post, and not always on a regular basis. This is supposed to be fun, right?
No hard feelings, but lighten up!

If we're talking egregious Emmy snubs, I'd bring up Mary-Louise Parker and WEEDS in general receiving almost nothing this year.

Masterson and Benanti both gave stronger performances than Krakowski in my opinion.
Oh, wait. Both Masterson and Krakowski were nominated, so we shouldn't even mention them in this post (apparently). And, Benanti, altough nom-worthy shouldn't have won, in my opinion, so she shouldn't be mentioned either.

Maria Friedman should have been nominated and should have won for best actress in a musical for Woman in White.
Also,
Michael Ball should have been nominated (at least) for best supporting actor in a musical for Woman in White.

Beauty and the Beast-9 nods, 1 win-what happened to Susan and Gary and that set? Not winning? And yet the worst Sondheim show, Passion, won Best Musical?
And how could Sherie Rene Scott not even be nominated, but Karn Ziemba win?
And, in general, Lion King beating Ragtime????????

Pardon?
Sondheim's "worst" musical is still a lot better than Beauty and The Beast and a LOT of other shows.
SRS perhaps deserved a nomination, and even that's debatable for Aida, but the part is so poorly written. No one could save that, not deserve a Tony for it.

BEAUTY & THE BEAST is lucky it got the nominations it got. It was definitely a very light year, so B&TB lucked out in that regard. Any other year and it wouldn't have even made the cut for Best Musical. And, Terrence Mann? Hello? Major pitch problems, there. I thought the set was atrocious. The only possible nomination it was worthy of was for Burke Moses as Gaston and he didn't even get the nod.
Posted: 8/17/06 at 1:21pm
Moses was delightful and deserved the nod over the overacting Beach.

Also, thanks for the "Jean Smart - Man Who Came to Dinner" correction. I didn't know that she was recognized. I'm glad she was. I loved that production. I'm so glad it's out on DVD.

haha just kidding!!!!!!
yeah i agree that Christian Borle should have been nominated for Spamalot.
i actually really think deborah craig should have been nominated over celia keenan-bolger for spelling bee if they would only nominate one. celia was good and everything, but deborah's part was definitely a lot more interesting.
i also really enjoyed sarah uriate berry's performance in Light in the Piazza and was amazed to find out she wasn't nominated
as well as Bernadette in into the woods!

Also, Gabriel Byrne in A Touch of the Poet.

Many of the others mentioned from different seasons, I agree with also esp York for Victor/Victoria.
Edited for typos.

I also agree that Borle should have won for SPAMALOT... I loved all those nominees but he should have been nominated and won

Aida for Best Musical (It didn't need to win, but they gave it Best Score. I mean, come on!)
Ruthie Henshall for Putting It Together revival should have been nominated and possibly, won. (Goerge Hearn got a nomination. Clearly, she was the best.
