Christine Ebersole won for Leading that year, and Cady Huffman won Featured (with quite the competition the way it was). Ms. LaManna would have stood no chance. This was the year of THE PRODUCERS, THE FULL MONTY and 42ND STREET.
And did I mention THE PRODUCERS?
I agree Ty Giordano should have that TONY on his shelf right now.
Two fairly prominent examples of people who were unexpectedly not nominated are Joel Grey in the Chicago revival (because the producers forgot to ask for him to be put in Featured) and the guy in the Most Happy Fella revival (don't know the story behind that one). Ann Crumb says that she was originally told she got a nomination for Aspects of Love but that they took it back and nominated someone else instead.
I agree that Christian Borle's non-nomination is a headscratcher. I certainly enjoyed Michael McGrath and Christopher Sieber's performances, but Christian Borle had a much larger and showier part and IMO was the best male performer in the whole show.

jewishboy,
At the time of the first Cabaret, Sally and the Emcee were supporting roles. It was really a vehicle for the Schneider and Shultz characters. That changed with the movie and second and third revivals.
Sorry, Wanna Be A Foster-but I 100% agree with ZoneFace. While Stephanie J. Block and Natalie Venetia Belcon were very nice in their respected shows, Anika was the clear winner of that category, especially since it was obvious that Caroline, or Change (the most original and inventive musical that season) wasn't going to win any other awards that night. Anika gave a remarkable and truly "I've made my mark" performance. While Tonya was incredible, too, as was Veanne Cox. The one person I couldn't stop talking about was Anika. Stephanie and Natalie both are wonderful singers and fine actresses, neither brought to their roles or their shows what Anika did. They may have deserved a nomination (honestly, I felt that the category was fine the way it was) but Anika was the only one who deserverd to actually walk up on that stage and accept the award.
I also thought of Janine La Manna in Seussical. She should have been nominated and won.
As mediocre as ALL SHOOK UP was, there was a single performance in it that really stood out for me. This performance came from Sharon Wilkins who was heartbreaking and delivered a quite haunting THERE'S ALWAYS ME which came out from nowhere. It totally blindsighted me because from all of the colorful, fluff musical numbers before and after it, smack dab in the middle of the show was this tour de force vocal performance that was undeniably worthy of a much better show. She at least deserved to be nominated.
I also thought John Gallagher Jr. was quite impressing in RABBIT HOLE. He definitely deserved a nomination last season. If it was up to me, he would have won. And even though she got a nod, Tyne Daly deserved to win last season. She was phenomenal.
I agree that Christian Borle was robbed of a Tony nomination--maybe even a win--for a SPAMALOT. I mean, Chris Sieber and Michael McGrath were fine I guess, but neither were Tony-worthy.
Also, Pippie Poppins--
I believe Jill Haworth (Sally) did receive top billing in the original production of CABARET, but you are correct that Joel Grey was much lower down on the list--he was like, fifth or something. Anyway, although I wasn't yet alive to see her performance, judging from what I've read in theater history books, Haworth wasn't that well-received in the role, which is probably why she didn't get a Tony nomination.
i agree that piazza shoudlve won the tony instead of spamalot. it was the most beautiful show in 5 years, easy!
and i know its not really going along with the thread exactly, but everyone from sweeney todd was robbed, the show especially.
I have to say that I really liked Denis O'Hare in Sweet Charity, and was surprised he didn't even get nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

I thought that THE WEDDING SINGER was snubbed BIG TIME.
The Woman in White also
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was snubbed also.
I agree and disagree with so many posts!
I agree that Anika Noni Rose deserved the win.
I agree that Tonya Pinkins deserved to win. (Idina screeching thru WICKED??? Please.)
I disagree that Hunter Foster should have won for URINETOWN. He may have deserved a nomination, but the person who was truly robbed was Jeff McCarthy as Officer Lockstock.
Someone thought that BEAUTY & THE BEAST was snubbed?? I find that shocking. I thought they were more than generous with so many nominations for such a lousy show.
Janine LaManna deserved a nom for SEUSSICAL, but I felt that it should have been it's only nomination. Horton did nothing for me.
Joel Grey didn't deserve a nom for CHICAGO, so I'm fine with that one.
I agree that Christian Borle should have had Michael McGrath's nom.
I think that Mark Harelik should have had Matthew Morrison's nom for PIAZZA. It's too bad Aaron Lazar didn't originate the role of Fabrizio, because he'd have a Tony on his mantle right now.
Kerry Butler should have been nom'd for HAIRSPRAY.
Linda Stephens should have been nom'd for the DAMN YANKEES revival.
Nathan Lane, Jean Smart and Harriet Harris should all have had noms for THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER. (Was it eligible?)
Sally Murphy should have been nom'd for both THE GRAPES OF WRATH and CAROUSEL.
First of all, what are you people smoking this morning and why am I (not a big fan of hers), the FIRST person to point out that Anika Noni rose not only WAS nominated for Caroline but WON!, Hello?! So let's stop putting her on any list.
Now, for actual correct answers, it all goes back to the same year (1999) when Sherie Rene Scott and Orfeh *should* have been nominated for Amneris and Annette respectively and in my and MANY others' opinion, Orfeh *should* have won in the featured actress category. And as has also been mentioned ad nauseum, it was the same screwed season that Contact won for best "musical". This is a topic that has been broached many, many times in the past.
There have been many, many oversights in the distant and more recent past but the one or two that still baffle most of the people I know (more recent) is Orfeh's lack of a nomination and subsequent win for SNF. I love Sherie and she most definitely was snubbed big time, but she was in a better show, with other great performers on stage with her. Orfeh had none of those "indulgences" and still managed to give a brilliant performance, night after night. I should know, I saw SNF ALOT! How could everyone forget the "my middle name means gift from God" speech that Anika gave when she picked up her Tony?

No one was putting Anika on Any list, go back and re-read the thread. Those of us talking about Anika were disputing those who calimed that Stephanie Block should have won that award.
Edie Falco in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune
Megan Mullally in How To Succeed in Business...
Steven Sutcliffe in Ragtime
Lea DeLaria in On The Town
Betty Buckley in The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Laura Benanti in Nine
Judy Kuhn in Rags
Cyndi Lauper in The Threepenny Opera
This list could just go on and on, but I'll stop there.
Well then It didn't "read" that way to me, so my apologies. I don't think Stephanie Block held a candle to Rose in CoC and again, I'm not a big Rose fan.
If people are sick of similar topics, why open it, read it, and respond to it? Not everyone has been involved with these boards for long periods of time.
Not sure why people get so hostile!

Scooter, you really haven't been here very long if you think this thread is hostile :). Yes, Sherie was completely overlooked as was Orfeh and recent board obsession, Amy spanger, all in the same season and instead those slots were filled by far less worthy performances. What was in the water and cold cuts the nominators were served that season?

I have to say I believe Michael Ball should have been nominated. Even on this board we chatted that it was between he and one other. His Fosco was fantastic. Sure he got sick and the show closed early but that does not deny the wonderful performance. Maria Friedman also. Just an opinion.

I have to agree with everyone who mentioned Rachel York in Victor/Victoria. I assumed she would walk away with the Tony after I saw her performance, and when she wasn't even nominated, I was shocked!
Also agree about Christian Borle's performance in Spamalot.
And Jeff McCarthy in Urinetown...

One correction. Jean Smart was nominated in 2000 for Man Who Came to Dinner.
I would agree that Harriet Harris should've been nominated, but shouldn't have won over Voila Davis.

The 2004 Little Shop revival should have been at least nominated.
