I looked to see if anyone has made mention of this and can't find anything. I am thrilled that the new tour of "Peter Pan" , the Comden Green, Styne and Leigh show, that originated with Mary Martin,, is going out with a male Peter Pan.. It's about time. Is this the first time this version of the show has had a major revival with a correct gender casting?
"Correct" interesting way to frame it, considering the role was written to be played by an adult woman, including the vocal range for the songs. But I guess there's potentially some heightened emotional/thematic immediacy that come come from having an actual adolescent boy play the role - it's been done before, but not in a major production of this specifical musical adaptation, to my knowledge.
(And while I don't approve of non-union tours, it's hard to deny that this IS a major production, considering the fact that it's directed by Lonny Price, with a brand new book revision by Larissa FastHorse)
I did not realize it was non-union. How disappointing. i guess I'm naive but I was not aware that some of venues that this show is going to had non union tours.
I mean I can't imagine that the songs will sound as good with Nolan Almedia's voice singing them as opposed to someone with the correct vocal range the part was written for. I may try to go out of morbid curiosity. Listen to Mary Martin singing "Neverland" and try to imagine a Tenor singing it.
Well, the actor playing Captain Hook is non-binary, so I guess it evens out? Seriously though, if people want to see a woman play Peter Pan, the Mary Martin, Cathy Rigby, and Allison Williams video recordings are widely available. If they are overhauling the material for a new generation, they might as well "go big."
