Saw it again last night...loved it even more the second time! Borle's performance has gotten even more over-the-top over the past few months...and I mean this as a compliment.
(SPOILER??)
The trunk scene went on for a solid minute longer (it seemed) and Borle had the rest of the cast breaking character laughing...which only made the scene funnier! Chanler-Berat had to collect himself before he continued...Borle had to approach him a second time to continue the scene. Too funny!
Well that was a big disappointment. I couldn't wait to leave the theatre. Act 2 was better then Act 1 but that's not saying much. I can't believe how horrible all the jokes were. That being said everyone around me was laughing up a storm and raving about it during intermission.
They must have used that Stache says the wrong word and then Smee corrects him joke at least 10x.
All the "current day" jokes that were thrown into the show were equally as horrible.

Play Esq., I was there last night as well (it was my 2nd time seeing the show) and the trunk scene was hysterical, I noticed Carson Elrod, Kevin del Aguila, and Celia Keenan-Bolger cracking up too. And you're right, Borle was even more over the top than he was when I saw the show a few months back, and even more hysterical. My stomach started to hurt from laughing during the trunk scene, every time I thought he couldn't wring another laugh out of it he did.
SPOILER: Why does Peter keep asking why Molly kissed him if he spends the first 20 minutes of PETER PAN not knowing what a kiss is?
At the end of the play, they say that true to Lord Aster's word, Peter forgets everything but Molly never does...I would imagine that includes the kiss.

Watching an actor KNOW they're being funny is completely unfunny.

Re, cracking up onstage, cracking others up onstage.
Respect the text. Respect your audience. Respect your craft.

Every time I've seen an actor break onstage, the audience has laughed along with them and even applauded. For me when that happens, it's part of the charm and experience of live theater. And I think this play is an unoffensive forum for that to happen...it would probably be disruptive if I were watching someone crack up onstage during, say, Other Desert Cities, but in a show that already has so many asides to the audience and silly things happening, to me it's not a problem if it happens and then the actors get back on track (which is what happened here).
The guy playing Smee broke out in laughter today and took a minute to recollect himself.
I wasn't amused cause I didn't think what he was doing to cause the break was funny in the first place but the rest of the crowd seemed to enjoy it.
I never expected to hate this show as much as I did. By far the biggest disappointment of the season for me cause of all the raves it has received on here.

One of my best theater memories was watching Adrian Lester crack up after James Earl Jones made an unmistakable sexual gesture and then asked him, "Know what I mean, Brick?" in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The laughter was totally out of character but totally charming.
I thought it was very annoying. Don't get what all the fuss is about.
Nice staging I guess. Was thinking about doing my laundry the whole time.
I would recommend staying away. My opinion only.

I think Borle's performance is one of the most arrogant and uninspired I've ever seen. But that's just me.
And thanks, perfectlymarvelous, I must've missed that. Because I was probably thinking about what I wanted for dinner.

I too did not really enjoy this show. It had some moments that i found highly amusing, but for the most part it was just not my cup of tea, but I can see how others would find it funny. I am not really a play person but I went to see it because of all the good things I heard about it and how amazing Christian was. I also found the trunk scene to be painfully boring, it was only funny for me the first moment, and then whn the otehr actors on stage lost it and started laughing. I did not fin hi performance to be original or unique. He reminded me of someone I went to high school with, only I suspect I would have found it funnier if tht classmate of mine were onstage as I think he has better comic timing, and knows when to move things a long. I originally thought Christian dragged that scene out to milk it for al it was worth since it was his last week, but it seems as though he had been doing it for a while.
Oh well the set was really something special and at least I can say I experienced it, even if my enjoyment outcome was not what I was hoping for.
I had high hopes for this when I saw it recently but add me to the group that didn't care for it overall. Some moments were entertaining but I can't say it was my favorite theater experience this year. Borle certainly put it all out there, I just didn't feel it was a performance that was head and shoulders over others this year and over the top has never been my preference. Perhaps high expectations played a part but a bit disappointing for me.
