Oh. My. Goddess. I yam so brilliant sometimes I scare myself.
Leave the Majestic intact and bring in Yeston-Kopit's Phantom in rotating repertory with Ken Hill's Phantom Of The Opera. Say, alternating months. The Broadway Message Boarders would have a field day rending their already rended garments, the NYC critics would have a silent competition determining who could write the most poisonous reviews, the native NYers would either rush to the shows to claim "first rights" or be totally blase and ignore the hubbub and the touristas would be so vague on the concept that they would believe they were seeing the "real thing". A win/win situation all around, yes?

Why YES...as a matter of fact I have seen both. Waaay back before other POTO productions were mounted in the US Jonathan Rennis of San Fransissyco's Theatre On The Square acquired the rights to and mounted a very successful staging of the.Ken Hill POTO. If I recall, he "forgot" to advertise it as a faux-Phantom and the shills turned up in droves...much to the amusement of SF theatre queens. I was one. A theatre queen, to be clear/queer.
I'm sure there may be some SFers who are still alive and remember this rather charming production.
Attended the Yeston-Kopit Phantom at the San Jose Performing Arts center, as part of their now defunct Civic Light Opera
Goddess! I'm old.

I’d really like to see the Yeston Phantom at Encores.

The Ken Hill Phantom couldn't pull a bait-and-switch in this day and age like they did in San Francisco. The Twitterverse would be on them like white on rice.

As a matter of fact, I yam. And having a brilliant conversation to boot.
YOU must relate to the old Dorothy Parker adage "If you can't say anything nice about someone ... come sit next to me".

It is not a Dorothy Parker quote; the remark originated with Alice Roosevelt Longworth.

I stand corrected. It was Dorothy Parker who opined "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make.her think". I suppose that could apply to some individuals on this board, yes?

Feeling OK today, chief? Looks like you're celebrating 4/20 a little bit too hard??

I resemble that remark! I do not inhale. Nor do I dissolve anything either. Or shoot, snort nor drink. " "You come crawling' back to Broadway. Well, Broadway doesn't go for BOOZE and DOPE! ".
As a matter of fact, I'm giddy over my.annual orgy of Broadway shows next week. A slightly catholic mix. Bad Cinderella, &Juliet, Sweeney Todd, A Beautiful Noise, Life Of Pi, Some Like It Hot and Fat Ham. My nephew is an agent/talent manager/former producer on HBO and has clients in some of the minor or supporting roles. I may meet a few after the shows.
Do the names Helena York, Rick Faugno, Jeremy Jordan and Teal Wicks ring bells? I could go on, but I don't want to appear smug. <snark>

I directed the California production of the Yeston / Kopit beginning at the Bakersfield Civic Light Opera that traveled on to San Jose I believe. It was really quite charming in its construction actually.
