Wow- good point, LoringsGuy! I totally agree about the Streep. She kinda kicks ass no matter what she does, but I wouldn't buy her as a silent screen legend.
And good call on Marsden, M23-- if not Jackman (giggle), then James Marsden would be cool. The age difference between Joe and Norma would be more pronounced and believable. He's 5 years younger than Hugh.
And these days, hotter too...
James is only 5 years younger than Hugh?
I'd have thought Hugh is at least 15 ys older.
elfantasma, I kinda agree with you, Meryl is probably a little bigger right now, since she was nominated for an Oscar last year for "Prada", and she is probably the most famous actress of her generation, but Close would be a "close" second.
They probably have about the same box office appeal.
It's a toss up between Barbra and Meryl. Meryl is the greatest film actress of our generation. Barbra is the greatest singer of this generation.
Barbra is riding high from her 2006 North American tour and her 2007 European Tour that just ended. Meryl was in the audience on Barbra's closing night of the tour. Barbra introduced her as the greatest film actress of our time.
Meryl is still riding high from her role in "Prada." It's a toss up between both of them. Each one would be brilliant!!!
Hugh Jackman would a be superb Joe Gillis.
So, we'll just play the waiting game. Let's hope that something happens very soon!
Meryl would be my first pick! Then Barbara and then Glenn... although all three are great.
Meryl or Barbara.
Though I have to hear Meryl sing.
But I think Meryl can do it.
chino, rent "Postcards from the Edge" with Meryl Streep and Shirley Mac Laine, she sings a couple of songs in that movie.
Meryl sang in "Ironweed," "Postcards From The Edge," "Silkwood" and a recent Robert Altman film..........can't remember the title.
And, let's not forget that back in 1988-89, Meryl was signed to do the film version of "Evita." Oliver Stone was to direct, Paula Abdul was going to cheorg (sp?), and Meryl started to record the soundtrack. But, it all fell apart and never happened.
Meryl is currently in London filming the film version of "Mamma Mia." After that, she'll start filming "Doubt."

Guys, don't forget that Glenn was involved in this project in probably the busiest moment of her career (early to mid-90's), and took a big paycut to be part of it. Back then, not too many Hollywood stars took the risk of doing Broadway, I can recall Vanessa Williams in Kiss of the Spider Woman that same year, but not too many big stars did theatre back then.
Just in case Neilb didn't see it.
Glenn/Meryl tied . . . . . and then Barbra.
Thanks for the tip muscle23ftl!
By the way, is that her real voice in "Death Becomes Her?" cause if it is, I think she can do the role.
well glenn close has already sung the score and i think that for the role it takes a great actress coupled with a great voice. glenn close just seems the appropriate choice to me; why not patti lupone though?! she's great and she should do it more than any of the others! hollywood needs to get with the program and hire people who originate the roles to play them.
Meryl all the way.
patti lupone though?! she's great and she should do it more than any of the others!
Even if in some alternate universe they offered the role to Patti, there's no way she'd accept it.
Im a big fan of Lupone, but she is not famous enough to headline a movie like this, obviously they are looking for a Hollywood star with larger fame/following. Lupone is one of Broadway's biggest divas, but Broadway doesn't equal box office success. The NY theatre scene is a very limited and small community.
Ah, but since you mentioned her
That's a great pic!
I think as far as Broadway stars, I'd love to see Christine Ebersole in a revival of this show. She'd be terrific.
Any more pix of Patti as Norma?

I don't think Meryl is ideal for the role. Don't forget that SUNSET BOULEVARD is one of the best films ever made...and Norma Desmond is one of the most iconic roles in film history. Not only would the script of a musical version have to be killer for Streep to even consider doing such a thing, but it would be very weird. I wouldn't buy Streep as Desmond at all.
And Barbra is just all wrong.
I don't care what you say, Glenn Close is the perfect choice for the role - on stage or on film. And, by the way, isn't Close already committed to the project? Meaning, isn't it definite that she's doing the film?

Glen Close would be my pick.
GLENN ALL THE WAY! To me she is the epitome of Norma Desmond and always will be.
Have we forgotten to consider Faye? (just kidding of course)
