Pippin in Japan: "Magic To Do"

https://www.playbill.com/article/watch-the-japanese-cast-of-pippin-perform-magic-to-do?fbclid=IwAR2qwFGjCVU6GYL_bnJkguzyiMe0fuTo4cq3_KEuNIPVb_9fC0asP9HDVUk Broadway revival cast member Orion Griffiths is part of the ensemble. I thought I recognized him. He's sporting a leaner look.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Well, did you at least get to see John Rubinstein and Jill Clayburgh? How were they?

Wonderful, everyone in the show was. Especially John Rubinstein's hair! I remember hiding behind Playbill when they tried to get people from front row up on the stage at the end. Very shy person!

It's kinda cute that he doesn't know the Japanese lyrics.

Listen, I don't take my clothes off for anyone, even if it is "artistic". - JANICE

That Leading Player's a little stiff.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Crystal Kay was supposed to be Motormouth in a production of Hairspray over there pre-pandemic. I recently read, they are finally starting performances for it in September. So, I wonder who will be motormouth now.

According to the article, the production is running until September 19, then going onto a different city from the 23 until the 27. Maybe this is a more common place practice in Japan, but doesn't that seem like quite a short run for so much effort? Just a bit less than a month -- opens August 30, runs until September 19, then 4 more days. A big production for a small timeframe.

It all has the feel of a good dinner theatre production. There are a lot of dead eyed and under energised performances up there…

That's typical in Japan. Any production of ACL in the past 15-20 years has typically done that. Play 2-3 weeks at a time in 3 different cities.
