I'm making a friend a mixed disc with songs about parenthood. So far (it's late so I'm not coming up with much but I'm sure there's tons).
New Words
The Story Goes On
Children Will Listen
Thanks in Advance.
Bwahahahaha. (Sorry, that's the cynical parent in me.)
But seriously, what a lovely idea. I'm assuming your friend is expecting their first??
Sunrise, Sunset??
They have two children and one of the Fathers is very sentimental about parenthood. I'm doing a mixed CD for everyone this year for their respective holidays and this theme seems to fit him best.
Father to Son - Falsettos
Fathers and Sons - Working
Sure you don't want to throw 'Kids' into the mix

What about Fatherhood Blues from Baby? It's kind of an up song.
I absolutely second huskcharmer's "Fatherhood Blues" suggestion. Even though you already have a Baby song on there, I think two can make the final cut.
"Growing Pains" and/or "Don't Be Afraid of Anything" from Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
"Stop, Time" from Big.
"I Don't Need Anything But You" from Annie
"When The Children Are Asleep" from Carousel
"Love Is a Very Light Thing" from Fanny
"Getting Tall" and/or "Nine" from Nine
"We Got Us" and/or "Taking Care of You" from Golden Rainbow
Don't know the show or song well, but I heard it sung once beautifully, and if I remember correctly, it was positive: "Our Children" from Ragtime.
"Breeze off the River" from The Full Monty
how about "You're Nothing Without Me" (from City of Angels)?
*naw, just kidding...

"Wheels of A Dream" from Ragtime
And pretty much the whole score of Baby
Billy Bigelow's "Soliloquy" from CAROUSEL
"Be Kind to Your Parents" from FANNY
"The Other Generation" from FLOWER DRUM SONG

There are a couple in the new "101 Dalmations musical": "A perfect family" (where Pongo and his wife sing about having kids [puppies]), "World's greatest Dad" (Pongo plans to be the perfect father) and "My sweet child" (Pongo's wife Missus sings of her love for her kids [the song is directed at one of the little girl puppies]).
They are cute songs and very parent-centric. I don't think this show has a cast album out though.
You'll Want Me to Shine- Its on Lauren Kennedy's Here and Now Cd
"I Won't Mind" by Jeff Blumenkrantz, while not so much about parenthood, but about longingo for parenthood, is very moving.
"Solioquy" from Carousel is a MUST.
As is:
"Our Children"
"Breeze off the River"
"The Beauty Underneath" (Love Never Dies...this is a maybe)
"When the Children Are Asleep"
"Light", "I Am the One (Reprise)", and "Maybe" all from Next to Normal
I think "Till There Was You" would be very appropriate too.
"If He Walked into My Life" from Mame.
There's actually a wealth of parenting songs
No Matter What from Beauty And The Beast

"What Could Be Better?" from BABY
"The Beauty Is [reprise]" from Light in the Piazza
"Somebody Gonna Love You" from The Color Purple
"Together Wherever We Go" from Gypsy
maybe "Inutil" from In the Heights, depending on your definition of 'positive'

I third (fourth?) Our Children from Ragtime.
Also, Christmas Lullaby from Songs For A New World.
It follows "Story Goes On" so I think it gets forgotten, but "Ladies Singing Their Song" is probably one of my favorites from BABY.
Would "Fable" count? It's not really ABOUT parenthood, but it's the most maternal song I can think of.
"Splipping Through My Fingers" - from Mamma Mia!
It's a little sad cause it's about how fast your kid grows up, but I think it's a delightful song, and there's nothing negative about it.
There's also:
The Baby Song from "I Love You, You're Perfect now Change"
Father's Day from "Children of Eden" - Given that this is for a man this one is really perfect.
Race You to the Top of the Morning from "Secret Garden" - Iffy.

Something Was Missing from the Annie 30th anniversary cd. Great if the little one is a girl.
