Opening night. Winter Gardens, New York.
Unfortunately, that is NOT the Winter Garden Theatre (as they ALL captioned on the photo). That photo is actually from the Washington DC theatre during the show's first tryout stop in August 1957. Philadelphia was the next city prior to the show's arrival on Broadway.
I thought that my self!
I took it from the Library Of Congress site and they say its the opening night at the Winter Gardens New York!

The glorious Lyceum Theatre, London
'The Lion King', almost 10 years here.
'Blue Man Group'
New London Theatre.
This was 3 and a half stories high and visible 4 blocks away as you approached the theatre.
Here is the actual Winter Garden marquee just 3 years before WEST SIDE STORY opened. From numerous photos from past shows -- ranging from this 1954 PETER PAN marquee, to FUNNY GIRL in 1964, MAME in 1966, FOLLIES in 1971, 42ND STREET in 1980, CATS in 1982 thru 2000, to even its current resident MAMMA MIA! -- the name WINTER GARDEN name has never been replaced by the show's title. Also, the Winter Garden marquee is quite long in length and does not have that pot/cup/whatever above it -- its always had that enormously wide billboard.
Of ALL people, the Library of Congress should know the difference. Apparently all those other sites are under the same assumption about the Library of Congress and captioned this photo as: Opening Night, Winter Garden, New York... when it ain't so.
'Me And My Girl' Adelphi Theatre London.
Later to transfer to New York and open the Marquis Theatre.
The arm on this design used to tilt the crown for the first 2 years of the run, one day it stopped and they never fixed it!
The front of the theatre was looking pretty sad by the mid 80s but was soon to get a multi million make over for the world premier of 'Sunset Blvd'
'Evita' The ill fated revival.
The Adelphi after a bit of a clean up!
