Pre-Broadway Musicals - Will There Be A Logjam?

A list of musicals which have staged or announced "Pre-Broadway" runs....

Can anyone expand on these three lists, or tell me what determines which of these productions make it to Broadway, and which ones stay stuck in the pre-Broadway limbo?

& Juliet and Cinderella are essentially confirmed due to their casting notices, but just not announced.

I think Dancin' would flounder on Broadway. They'd be better off touring it.

Any chance of Black No More having a Broadway life? Almost Famous is rumored to be coming in, as well as Devil Wears Prada.

Money and reviews are what will get some of these shows to Broadway. If a title is met with indifferent reviews or doesn't have a passionate & financially-savvy producer behind it, it's financially best to cut their losses and not move to Broadway.

Every year, there are shows that have "pre-Broadway" runs at nonprofit theatres, and every year there are shows that never come to Broadway for one reason or another. Many from Paper Mill (The Honeymooners, The Sting, Benny & Joon, My Very Own British Invasion, Half Time, etc) but also Alice By Heart, The Wrong Man, Superhero, The Flamingo Kid, The Band Wagon, Little Dancer/Marie (allegedly still happening), etc.

Every show is coming to Broadway until it doesn't!

A non-musical play to add to your list: GOODNIGHT, OSCAR (with Sean Hayes as Oscar Levant, written by Doug Wright, directed by Lisa Peterson) just finished a run at the Goodman and is allegedly coming to Broadway next season, produced by Barbara "Strange Loop" Whitman. I'm sure there are other plays, too, that have played Off-Bway or regionally and are now trying to come in.

A big factor will be whatever kind of dropoff there is. September and January will be big "checkpoint" moments. Also, side note, I keep forgetting Kimberly Akimbo has not actually announced a theatre.

We know the following houses do not have announced tenants this fall, though several have strong rumors:

Broadhurst
Broadway
Golden
Hudson
Imperial
Longacre
Studio 54

...and several of the following are likely to become available by fall or winter. Again, some have rumored tenants:

Sondheim
Belasco (Mockingbird situation TBD)
JEJ/Cort (reno completion tbd)

Nederlander
Jacobs
Lunt
Lyceum
Music Box
Schoenfeld

The phrase “pre-Broadway run” is meaningless at this point. Red, White, and Blaine was a “pre-Broadway run.”

The implication that A Strange Loop will close early is a bit uncomfortable given its status as a major Tony Awards contender. Several of the more esoteric Best New Musical winners (Passion, Fun Home, The Bands Visit) closed relatively early, but I expect A Strange Loop to make it to 2023...

Tina, Come From Away and Dear Evan Hansen have enjoyed great runs, but I don't think any of those musicals can be immortal - they will probably have to close soon...

All those shows are relatively smaller scale shows so don't see anything going into the Broadway for awhile.

This concept of a "logjam" of Broadway shows is nothing new - there are always more shows that want to play Broadway than there are theatres.

Every time I'm in town for theatre and leave my NYC hotel for a jog, I call it a "pre-Broadway run."
