Pretty Woman - NY Post Page Six - Understudy Saves the Day

I guess neither of you read the article. They don't call Pascal an understudy.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Yes they do, read the last sentence: “Understudy Adam Pascal is also filling in for Andy Karl...”

It does. "

Pretty Woman” understudies saved the musical during a performance Sunday afternoon, after its star got too sick to go on midshow.

Samantha Barks — who plays Vivian Ward, the Julia Roberts role in the movie — fell ill at the beginning of the matinee, leaving understudy Jillian Mueller to take over.

“The lead girl literally ran off sick after singing the second song,” an attendee told Page Six.

“The show stopped! The understudy came on and killed it. She was stunning.”

Understudy Adam Pascal is also filling in for Andy Karl as Edward Lewis, originally played by Richard Gere."

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

What a ridiculous thing to write about, this is hardly the first time.

And CapnHook....my initial thought, too, but reading is fundamental

Not that I'm aware of. She's been working on Broadway and regionally pretty consistently since she was a teenager, including the revival of Bye Bye Birdie.

I agree it's a little ridiculous to write about an understudy who's literally just doing her job, but I guess they have to fill column inches somehow.

Well they must have updated the article, because it does not refer to Adam Pascal as an understudy: "Adam Pascal is also filling in for Andy Karl as Edward Lewis, originally played by Richard Gere."

While no one cares, the update IS more accurate.

It's like these people just feel the show must keep happening no matter what else is going on...

I actually sent an email to the woman who wrote the article the other day correcting her error about Pascal.

as this article is by the post, i think it’s only right to quote john mulaney here.

‘After that, under an angel is a hero. A hero is any man who does his job. You’ll a lot of times see headlines that are like, “Hero Tutor Teaches After School,” and you’re like “Yeah.”’
