Rodgers and Hammerstein
Lerner and Lowe
Kander and Ebb
Bock and Harnick
Webber and Rice
Schonberg and Boublil
Who do you feel is the greatest musical theatre songwriting team in musical theatre history?
Feel free to mention teams besides the ones above.

It's hard to judge the greatest...other factors contribute like success, how their musicals were received, and you can delve into musical and lyrical terminology. It can get deep lol
I'm gonna say...
Rodgers and Hammerstein but closely followed by Kander and Ebb.

I'd say Kander and Ebb, because I love all their works. But R&H are also an incredible song team. They are really good.
All of the teams are really good, so it's kind of hard to choose.

Posted: 7/31/04 at 9:03pmRodgers and Hammerstein! I was in a musical revue of their work, and I learned a LOT from it. I don't think they ever composed a score that I didn't like.

Posted: 7/31/04 at 9:35pmAs far as history is concerned, R & H, because they penned so many shows we now consider to be the definitive classic American musical.

What are all the shows that R &H did?
Also how do you pronounce Ebb? - If that is possible to get across over the internet.

Hard to argue with R&H - but as a romantic classicist at heart, I'll always pick a Lerner & Loewe show to see

It's hard to discern (personall, at least) between "favorite" and what I think you're looking for. That said...
Rodgers and Hammerstein. They made such incredible contributions to musical theatre as a genre, and by doing so, probably changed the way America knows musical theatre. Kander and Ebb deserve mention, too.

R&H without a doubt. They have made some of the best musicals of the past millenium!
Cinderella
Sound Of Music
Oklahoma!
Carousel
The King and I
The list goes on and on and each and every show they have worked on has been more impressing than the other!

Posted: 7/31/04 at 11:26pmI'd say that if you're a fan of classic musicals then Rodgers & Hammerstein, but right behind them are Kander & Ebb..it's actually quite hard to compare the pairs.
#19re: R&H vs. L&L vs. K&E vs. B&H
Posted: 8/1/04 at 12:32amI'm going with Boublil and Schonberg. I think they've produced the most consistently beautiful songs. I've never been much of a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan ("The Sound of Music" is their only show that I like).

"Sondheim and himself."
That's what I thought of immediately after seeing this thread. I'm also partial to Ahrens and Flaherty.

My list:
1.Rogers and Hammerstein
2.Frank Loesser
3.Lerner and Lowe
4.Ahrens and Flahrety
5.Shaiman and Whittman
Hopefully someday I can be added to that list :) (I am aware of a few spelling mistakes...too tired now to fix them)

Well, if we had to pick the greatest, team OR individual, of course Sondheim would win. ![]()
