Hey, NTG... yeah, I'm back. THANK GOD!
Renthead - I was wearing black pants, a green tank top and a jean jacket. I'm like 5'2" and I look a little bit like Idina, if that helps you. I was at the Kean show, though.
Remember that article where Jai said he'd cry if he didn't get it? I was really pulling for him until I heard Wilson was in talks. I mean, Wilson is unbelievable and he's got the Tony and he's the original, but he has aged a lot, unfortunately. We'll see, I guess!

I'm sorry if I upset anybody, but I jumped in late into the discussion and I felt my opinion needed to be heard...er...read.
I like how the movie begins and ends with Angel. At least they got something right, Angel is the thesis, the central character who brings on all the good. So I do like that touch.
However, the engagement/gay marriage thing is not necessary at all. Especially since it's now set in the 1980's and not in present day. I just don't think those issues would have been around back then. It's not relevant to the story.
And regarding the dialogue, a sung-through movie does not draw people away from watching the movie. Again, look at "Evita" and "The Phantom of the Opera," the first was successful and won a couple of Golden Globes, the second is getting the biggest talk of this holiday season. And they're BOTH sung-through. I think the movie of "Rent" should be sung-through because it's so different than these two Andrew Lloyd Webber shows music-wise, and I think it would be really cool if all dialogue were sung to rock music. It's an interesting take on musical theatre and the movie musical, and I think it should be done that way. And anyway, we're talking about "Rent," which already has such a large following. Since it does, I'm sure a lot of people will want to see it how it's presented on the CD. As a movie, I think it'd be really interesting. And it'll still bring lots of people to come watch it. I mean how many movie musicals feature rock and pop music? People WILL come. The music should be heard more, is all.
There, I wasn't being too bashing-Columbus, was I? Haha.
Thoughts? Those are mine.

Cuz being here with me was just oh so horrible! ::pouts::
Kidding, kidding...
One thing I thought was amusing in the Chbosky script (and in some fanfics I've read) is that although all of the characters sing, only some of them are designated as "real singers".
I dunno if that makes any sense to anyone...

BEKA, I was away for Thanksgiving. I couldn't get a decent internet connection for more than a couple of minutes.
HeyMrMusic, I very much agree with what you're saying; and please, bash Columbus all you want. I still don't think he's the right person to handle this the way is needs to be handled, but c'est la vie. Did anyone see that "Rent Rant" on Broadway.com the other day? Interesting stuff. But anyway, you make a lot of really good points... probably things I've been trying to articulate for a while. And I love your description of Angel's character as "the thesis."

Thanks, Emcee. =)
And I did read the Rent Rant. Interesting...
By the way, I don't mean to get off track (for the subject says "Getting back on track..."), but I'm kinda new to the BWW message boards, so if I get out of line or anything, haha, I'm sorry, I'm still learning.
O and I hope everyone had a good Turkey (and/or Tofurkey) Day!

Posted: 11/26/04 at 4:54pmSteven, don't worry about it. And welcome. It's not that I have a problem with people disagreeing, I just don't want the entire thread to turn into bashing or a huge flamewar as the other Rent threads have. I'd much rather have actual intelligent conversation about it.

That's fine, intelligent is good. Haha.

about the 80s part...
I'm not sure the movie takes place in the 80s. It says:
"We begin a MONTAGE. Various shots. Streets of Manhattan. Christmas Eve. Mid 1980's."
When I read it, I took that as the montage showing scenes from the 1980s. New York has cleaned up a lot since the 80s, maybe it just means that they will be showing the conditions of NYC that the characters had grown up in.

Yeah, but it doesn't say anything about jumping back into the 90's. I was confused about that too, but if they do, they should clarify.
Or is it a possible typo? I really hope so. Haha.

Posted: 11/26/04 at 5:14pmLate 80's, early 90's I always figured. I mean, think about the time frame for the outburst of the AIDS crisis, ESPECIALLY its association with gay men.

If it doesnt explicitly state in the film (whether it be spoken or otherwise), people will assume it takes place late 80s/early 90s, like emcee said. Maybe its best this way, as Jonathan never set an exact year.
And good point, Stephen. It isn't clear. But, remember, this is still an early draft, Anthony has said there have been many revisions to it already.

emcee, whats the site for the screenplay again?
Getting back on track...#265
Posted: 11/26/04 at 5:20pmughh i really wish a more recent copy of the screenplay would leak... the one we're all looking at and debating is from almost 2 months ago, and all the changes that we're biting our fingernails down about could already be fixed.

If the changes had been made, would we have such things to discuss? lol
Yup, it was on page 3
Getting back on track...#270
Posted: 11/26/04 at 5:22pmthe first one is a fan script, and has no connection to chbosky and columbus's script, they were just both on the same page, so i linked them both

^^ i'd rather than this thread be boring and the screenplay be the way we want it than have an interesting thread...

Very good point BEKA, very good point. I think CC should hire us to write this screenplay lol
I'd love to discuss more, but I have a birthday party to go to. lol, and I'm debating which would be more entertaining: this thread or the party lol...
