Last year, for Phantom, apparently if you were in some certain spot, you were given extra tickets and could get in. I think a lot of the people from the online Phantom fan community got to go, or something, but a lot of people showed up just to watch and some happened to get lucky.
"i know in la, they hand out free tickets on the street in front of pantages just to get a "young" crowd in, but a lot should be invite"
Wait, what do you mean they give out free tickets? Free tickets to what? I should probably take advantage of that...
I have no info on the "Rent" premiere but, if this helps, I waited outside the theatre for the premiere of "Troy" last summer. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were there so the crowd had about 2,000 people. There were barriers and the cops lined everyone up across the street from the red carpet. Brad, Jen, and Eric Bana all came to the fans side of the street to sign some autographs. It was impossible to get everyone, do all of the red carpet interviews ("ET," "Access Hollywood," etc.) and still watch the movie so it was basically luck of the draw. The earlier you got there, the better you were stationed. I got there at 2pm for a 7:30pm show time and I was right across the street from the red carpet entrance. When all of the celebrities went inside, the security guards gave out 100 free tickets to the premiere (the film screening only...NOT the after party). I didn't get one but someone near me did and couldn't stay so I got the ticket. They usher you in behind the red carpet and you sit all the way in the back in the fans area. The front is for invited guests. I didn't stay for the majority of the film (it sucked and celebrity-watching in the vestebule was much more interesting) but it was a cool experience for what it was...people applauded when names came on the credits, when Brad took his clothes off, when cool stuff happened.
If this is standard protocol for movie premieres, that's what I would expect.
Hope this helped.
I want to go and sit between Rosario and Jason Lewis.
theonlyone, my boyfriend lived in la for about 6 months and saw atleast 2 premieres a month with free tickets

Wow, would they really cancel a show specifically because one of the actresses has other plans? I didn't realize Idina had that much pull. Are there no understudies?
I'm not sure how all shows at the Public work, but I remember when Normal Heart was playing, they didn't have understudies. With the Public being not-for-profit, it wouldn't be practical to keep understudies on the payroll (that's what I've been told in the past.) Perhaps someone can correct me if this particular show has understudies - for I can't speak for every production....
Aaron Lohr is also in this show and in the Rent movie, so maybe it was just easier to not have a performance so both Aaron and Idina could attend the premiere.
