I would’ve picked Murin over LaChanze for the last slot. Or Murin over Mueller.

Did i read the list wrong this morning? I swear it looked like LaChanze and DeBose were both nominated for leading actress. Now that I'm rereading it has DeBose in featured. I guess I was sleepy this morning LOL
I'm so sad that James McArdle from AiA went unnoticed. He made me love an unlovable character.
And leaving off Kennita Miller is also a crime. Haley was fabulous and deserves the nom, but Kennita was the soul of that show--and Phillip Boykin as well!

Did the organizers not go over the names beforehand with the announcers? And Hammer-Steen?? Seriously??? What's next? Stephen Sond-HEEM?? Franken-STEEN (For those young frankenstein fans)?? Next year, Tony organizers, get your act together."
Can you imagine any young performer, making their living in the theater and invited to read the nominations, who would NOT have rehearsed the pronunciation of the names more than once?
Bye, bye!

I totally agree. Kenita Miller’s Mama Euralie caught me completely off guard (in a wonderful way.)

Yes, I think it is very good. In another season it might have been overshadowed but not because it's a bad show, just because it's not that flashy. It's incredibly well constructed. I like that it isn't about imparting a simple lesson or a boy meets girl/loses girl/marries girl story. It's about a short period of time in the lives of these people in a way that feels truthful and genuinely embraces an ensemble cast. I was also entertained the entire time.
I agree that Katrina was good but not remarkable. I think Hailey has the flashier part and was just fine. Katrina had less to do but brought a lot of charisma to her role. I have some other shows I need to see but as of now I'm not wowed by Leading Actress in a Musical for the first season in a while.
Unrelated, but I'm happy to see that, at least on this board, there's a lot of love for Kenita. I hope she gets her nomination one day.

I agree with many others here. Kenita Miller should have gotten a nomination. She was amazing! And Phillip Boykin, too.

It seems SpongeBob and Mean Girls came in during the right season. Outside of The Band's Visit it seems there are very few viable considerations for new musical. Margaritaville and Summer seem to be the ones who got nixed because of their lesser reviews, while SpongeBob and Mean Girls got in by the hair of their chinny chin chin. None of these four seem to be getting incredible reviews. With Margaritaville and Summer getting bumped in favor of two rather meh musicals.

I haven't seen anything other than Frozen because of where I live, so I really can't judge... that said I really wanted Caissie Levy and Patti Murin to get nominations. They are amazingly talented, but also are just really nice, genuine, respectful people who have done their time and give outstanding performances... especially together. Like I said, I can't judge them against the other shows so I'm committing to be a grown up starting tomorrow. Until then, I appreciate a thread I can whine in for a day. I feel like Tonys should fall from the ceiling while the roof comes down at the end of Let It Go every night. They should have a best vocal performance category. Maybe Frozen wasn't competitive enough in the lead category next to other shows, but daymn... Levy can wail. Give her a Grammy or a something. She's an incredible singer.
Spongebob? Seriously? That's just embarrassing for the academy. I doubt they win any award. I loved Laura Benanti so much in Meteor Shower, bummed out about that. Everything else looks pretty good. No acting nominations for Frozen makes 100% sense to me!

Did you actually see the show and hate it, or are you bashing it on name alone? If it's the former, that's of course your prerogative - we're all entitled to our own informed opinions. If it's the latter, get over yourself and actually see the production. It's delightful. "The Academy" thinks so as well.
I was bummed that OOTI didnt rack up more but overall pretty happy with the nominations.

I don't understand why people keep saying that Spongebob and Mean Girls got bad reviews. They did not.
The reviews for Mean Girls were somewhat mixed, with a few flatout negative reviews thrown in there, but most critics said they at least enjoyed the show. Much more mixed than negative. As for Spongebob, most critics actually loved it. It didn't get the level of raves that The Band's Visit or My Fair Lady got, but reviews were by no means negative.
Overall I'm really happy for both shows. Spongebob I saw leading nominations but the amount of Mean Girls love took me by surprise in a good way. Can't wait to see what they both perform at the Tonys.
I wish Kate Rockwell would have gotten the nod over Ashley Park. Park is fine in the show, I don't think her material is the greatest. But damn does Rockwell shine.

HAHA. Why would I bash a show I have not seen? That's incredibly ignorant. Yes I unfortunately did see it and it was crap and gave me a headache. Step off. The "academy" didn't have a lot of choices this year. It won't win anything important. It SUCKS.

Andunfortuneately the bands visit sucked to me a total waste of an evening and i could not wait for the end to bolt. Root canals are more pleasant. However both shows deserbe to run and be seen and no matter what anyone person thinks not every show is written for every person. I wouldnt wish the bands visit to close. People go. Just because i would not again means nothing and i would never say just because i dont like it it wont win any awards. Band will win some the sponge will win some.
It doesnt matter who we want to win it only ma%ters to those who have a vote.

I mean... Hailey was great but I forgot I was watching a performance when I saw Katrina. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

I second this. I'm thrilled for Hailey and her Broadway debut and the accolades she and the show are getting, but Katrina Lenk was transcendent to me and I'm definitely pulling for her on Tony night. I also see where people are coming from who found Band's Visit boring, and it's not a show for everyone, but to me it was about how these individual people's lives were changed from this random experience. I think it's the same show as Come From Away in many ways, just the opposite in terms of overtness (and scale).
