Rare ones (off the top of my head: but there's probably lots lots more):
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - Original Concept (on vinyl). I saw this the other day, on CD, selling for $90!!
JOSEPH - Complete Album (1973) and Album with Tim Rice (1979)
EVITA - Australian Cast Recording (Vinyl). This is the worst Evita I have ever heard!
LES MISERABLES - Original French Concept Album. Is this rare? I don't think it is: but I never see it and it was very expensive when I found it
SONG AND DANCE - Sarah Brightman Vinyl (it's scratched to the s-house, though, and the cover's in appalling condition. I found it in a second-hand store)
CHESS - Original Broadway Cast Recording (CD); I see this everywhere: so I don't know what people mean by it being a rarity. I mean, COME ON!!
STARLIGHT EXPRESS - American Concept Album (very bizarre!) and Australian / Asian Tour Recording (Cassette: even MORE bizarre!)
SALAD DAYS - Two copies of the original Cast Album (vinyl) but each with different covers. The one that everyone would recognize has a massive tear through the middle on the front cover
SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM - Australian Recording. Never even heard of this until I found it at an auction
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - Australian Recording. This is NOT rare. I see this everywhere I go. Those who say it's rare is not looking hard enough!
JEKYLL & HYDE - Australian Promo Recording. Apparently extremely rare: for the production that never happened
DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES - English demos (including new ones for the London production that never happened: they sound very Disney or Sweeney Todd)
THE DREAM ENGINE - 3CD (Complete) Live Recording of the College Musical by Jim Steinman: starring Barry Keating (Starmites), Jim Steinman, Stephen Collins (7th Heaven), Sarah Harris and Ellen Parks (runs a casting agency in New York?). This is extremely rare, only came through the Stein-community, for its 30th anniversary in 1969
RHINEGOLD - A mish-mash of demos of the Steinman '72 musical
MORE THAN YOU DESERVE - Songs from the Public Theater Show (bootleg) where Meat Loaf first met Jim Steinman and starred as Rabbit in his musical. Very interesting....
THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW - Roxy Cast Recording? Someone told me this was ultra-hard-to-find. I don't believe them
THE SECRET GARDEN - Australian Promo: Highlights with 7 Tracks (has Philip Quast and Anthony Warlow): Can't find it
Many more. But can't remember now..

I wonder why that never came to Broadway?

The holy grail of cast albums is the original London cast of CHILDREN OF EDEN pressed by Polydor and subject to a bronzing problem which renders the discs unplayable. I am surprised Stephen Schwartz has not has this one reissued to correct the problem. (Universal owns it now, so if it does get reissued it would be by Decca Broadway)
WHOOP UP is the highest one I have seen on E-bay: $285.00
ALNM with Judi Dench rarely sells for less that $100/copy
A studio cast of MERRY WIDOW n teh Price-Less label sold for $135 (because Jeremy Brett is on this recording and it is hard to find)
The movie soundtrack of FINIAN'S RAINBOW was done by Rhino Handmade last year and limited to 2,500 copies. It sold out instantly and now goes for $125. (A lot of Pet Clark fans plus som Tommy Steele and Fred Astaire fans want it.)
The London cast of BARNUM usually sells for $75 or more (Michael Crawford fans want it)
The Toronto cast of JANE EYRE was a limited pressing and is hard to find in the U.S. since it was never released there. I have seen it in the $60-75 range on E-bay. Also, the Toronto cast of NAPOLEON is getting up above $50 a copy when it surfaces.
These are deleted now and starting to fetch prices in the $35-50 range (sometimes higher):

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

THE SECRET GARDEN - Australian Promo: Highlights with 7 Tracks (has Philip Quast and Anthony Warlow): Can't find it
Still avaiable in Australia, look @ readings.com.au
JEKYLL & HYDE - Australian Promo Recording. Apparently extremely rare: for the production that never happened
Worked on that production, Simon Burke was the lead, show died just as it was getting in the theatre.
STARLIGHT EXPRESS - American Concept Album (very bizarre!) and Australian / Asian Tour Recording (Cassette: even MORE bizarre!)
The Australian/Asian recording can still be found, plus also on of the best stagings of this show out side london...

I have that version of "The Secret Garden". Not by any means that great of a recording (I just don't like the source music and even Prior, Warlow and Quast couldn't save it).
I remember J&H failing to get out of the gate. Wasn't that just after the infamous 'cursed' "Sunset Boulevard"?.

I think so. That Sunset, btw. I'm sure had an EP too.
Have no idea what the story is with Jekyll and Hyde. Wildhorn's site claims there was an Australian production

Posted: 10/4/05 at 6:47amI just saw a copy of the Judi Dench NIGHT MUSIC on eBay with a $10 starting price, a $60 buy it now, and no bids. If you want a copy, you should check that one out.

Yeah, but are they crappy MP3s or the real sound on the CD?

Posted: 10/5/05 at 9:47amDownloading something off iTunes sounds exactly like it would on CD. (Granted, some play better through the computer, some better through the iPod, but one of the two ways will always get you a crystal clear sound).

I have that version of "The Secret Garden". Not by any means that great of a recording (I just don't like the source music and even Prior, Warlow and Quast couldn't save it).
Did you see it on stage, that production was flawless, even thou Prior was with child at the time ( Used it throw up at the end of the opening scene)
I remember J&H failing to get out of the gate. Wasn't that just after the infamous 'cursed' "Sunset Boulevard"?.
This was way before "Sunset", The biggest problem with sunset in Australia was Deb Byrne, that women was not suited for that production....But you can still find home taped copies of the special that was broadcast before the show's opening ( Hugh doing the title track...Deb doing "With one look" )
If any one saw the Australian production with the second "Norma" Maria Mercdes that was still the most thrilling and stunning sung night in theatre, any where in the world...

I have old tapes of old commercials of the Sunset Blvd production in Melbourne. That was a true disaster, it was. I never got to see it though: but I turn everytime I hear about it. Just tends to make a lot of people sick thinking about it. Don't know why?
The girl who was Mary in The Secret Garden is the daughter of a composer I once worked with on a musical: and I think she reprised the role, or sang some of the songs, in a Secret Garden cabaret (or something like that?) a few years back.
Jekyll and Hyde was supposed to starr Simon Burke (eewww)
If it was going to happen in Australia, why on EARTH did they NOT keep with Anthony Warlow? In that case, I am THRILLED it did not open

I am sort of the opinion that as much as I like Anthony Warlow (seriously he is great), but I don't want to see him in every gosh-darn production.
I have to completely agree with you on Debra Byrnes rosscoe(au). That women is the ultimate diva, and a lazy diva at that. I think the only person ever to benefit from anything she has done is her understudy considering regardless of what she does, her understudy will aways get to perform at least 50% of the time.
I have to admit I didn't see the performance of "The Secret Garden". I had seriously just moved to Melbourne at the tail end of its run on and thus had greater things to worry about money-wise. Saying that I would've liked to have seen it, CD aside, (if the fates had been kinder anyway). Frankly I'd see Marina Pryor read the phonebook.

Never did understand why they didn't release a proper cast album for Secret Garden. I mean, HELLLOOOOOO: Anthony Warlow, Philip Quast. Why didn't they fork out the cash for a full and proper album? I just don't get it.
Also: there should have been an Australian PHANTOM (with Anthony) because there was an Australian CATS. I have no idea why they didn't do one

By the time "Sunset" opened it had became the "Deb Byrne's" show, was working in theatre at the time ( on another show ) and remember hearing how half way thru act one she refused to go on, so show stopped for over a hour as the understudy got ready, who had never even been in costume prior, and in a true the show must go, went out and sang the house down, news quickly got around that Deb was never on that they even started not to tell the punters that she was not on, till only 2 minutes before curtain, to stop most of the punters leaving...
Must have been the most heavy comp show in "Australia"s history", we saw it every monday night during it's run for free, just so it looked liked there where bum's on seats..

I thought Debbie had a huge nervous breakdown in SUnset Boulevard? And that's what caused all the trouble.
Sunset, in most of its tenure, seemed to be plagued with troubles. Maybe it can be revived, in a more true-to-itself-text-and-music form, in the future?
