A legendary character actor with countless credits to his name. While he was best known for roles on various TV shows such as Evan Drake on Cheers, Sheriff Jimmy Brock on Picket Fences, and William Walker on Brothers & Sisters, he actually appeared on Broadway once. It was as Lucien Wilbanks in Rupert Homes’ short-lived stage play adaptation of John Grisham’s 1989 novel, A Time to Kill, back in 2013.

Skerritt lived primarily in Seattle and did a fair amount of theater there over the years, including Our Town at the Intiman under Bart Sher's direction.

He was announced for the Broadway production of Straight White Men in 2018, but he withdrew on the eve of previews for health reasons.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Out of his many film performances, I particularly liked his performance as The Father in " A River Runs Through it", directed by Robert Redford.

RIP Sir

I met him after A TIME TO KILL. He was lovely. I was going to see him in STRAIGHT WHITE MEN, but I was one of the unfortunate ones who ended up having to rebook twice because Skerritt withdrew, and then Denis Arndt crashed out.

93 is a good long life. Rest in peace.

He's terrific in MASH, but everyone forgets about him for some reason. Yes, he was very good on Picked Fences.
