I was just checking out all the new musicals with original scores (or at least, technically new according to Tony rules) opening this season on Broadway. It looks like there are 10 officially announced to open:
-Paramour
-Natasha, Pierre...
-In Transit
-Dear Evan Hansen
-A Bronx Tale
-Come from Away
-Anastasia
-Groundhog Day
-War Paint
-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Does anyone know the last time this many new musicals with original scores opened in one season?
i looked through a list of each broadway season for musicals, it looks like the last time there were as many new scores as this season was the 1978-79 season. This season included Ballroom, They're Playing Our Song, Carmelina, I Remember Mama, Platinum, The Grand Tour, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, King of Hearts, A Broadway Musical and most famously: Sweeney Todd.
And Amelie, which is expected this season.
Possibly also SpongeBob.
Heard that Bandstand is coming in.
Quite a refreshing change from the over saturation of Jukebox musicals that was going on for a while.

This season is not even half way through: Helen Hayes and Cort could've reopened by then. The Lyceum hasn't announced there next show.
Also a couple of shows opening this fall, are likely to tank.
Also don't forget the revival with:
the question (despite the thread's title) was about new musicals with original scores. this season definitely has the most in almost forty years.
personally, I think any other new musical that hasn't announced a theater should wait until the summer or fall to open. Just too much competition this season. I'm already worried that shows like IN TRANSIT & COME FROM AWAY will get lost in the stacked season.

very much so, yes.

Ah, okay. I really haven't been following it. The songs were really the only thing I liked about the film, but I do hope the show does well. I just have no idea if it will catch on. I think it will need a blazing start on Broadway if it hopes to continue once Frozen opens.

Now, Bandstand is coming in at a Shubert house TBD

3 of these shows won't make it to the tonys and 3 more will close right after the tonys.
I worry that A Bronx Tale will find the season early, don't think Bandstand will replace it though, as Papermill will get upset with their show being evicted and replaced by one of their own.

The New York Times says there are 12 new musicals ( so far )

Guess Bandstand isn't such a dead horse after all. So 11 new musicals with original scores and Holiday Inn? Is that the 12 the NYT is referring to?
This makes me so happy but I weep for my bank account.

Yeah, with Paramour and Holiday Inn I counted 12. Amelie will be 13.
