Poor Rent
Well, at least it beat Undiscovered.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 6:50pmOK well when Match Point and The New World are on the list as well and even in worse positions than Rent in the list, and when movies like In The Mix, Elektra, and Guess Who are missing, then you know whoever made the choices lacks all sort of common sense.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 6:55pmMatch Point which is finally one of Woody Allen's greatest works and Loggerheads, which is one of the best movies I've seen this year is on that list. Who is that guy anyways? What credentials does he hold? Yes, Rent had MANY problems but was still one of the better movies of the year.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 6:56pmMATCH POINT and THE NEW WORLD are both getting strong Oscar buzz and I saw MATCH POINT and thought it was one of Woody Allen's best movies ever and one of the best directorial comebacks in the history of cinema. It was one of the year's best.

#6re: Rent #18 on comingsoon.net's Terrible 20 list
Posted: 12/29/05 at 8:18pmMatch Point has been praised as the best Woody Allen film since Bullets Over Broadway (one of my favorite movies), the movie's likely to get some Oscar nods and got two or three Golden Globe nods, and The New World also has major Oscar buzz. Rent had some strong reviews, not all across the board, but critics from the New York Times and Entertainment Weekly praised the film, the film was flawed of course but not for any of the reasons this person mentioned on the list, and this is probably the only list that put it on the Worst 20 of the year.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 8:31pmI saw the Match Point trailer before Munich and could not believed how cliched it was. Nevertheless, I'll give the movie a chance as I did read about a few interesting plot twists.

GASP! Elektra on the worst 20?!! No! What next? Gigli on the worst movies list?!? Say it ain't so!
Sorry. I'm back to the real world now :) It's always amused me that people can so easily put good and bad labels on art of any kind. Different people like different kinds of artwork or books or movies or whatever ... I don't necessarily enjoy the movies that win Oscars every year. Oh well, a list is a list.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 9:13pmMaybe this list will be a good thing...publicity is publicity. Often when I hear how "bad" something is, I am curious to judge for myself. Especially if I originally anticipated it to be good.
#10re: Rent #18 on comingsoon.net's Terrible 20 list
Posted: 12/29/05 at 9:37pmWow. To say that several movies on that list don't belong there is an understatement.

Should be closer to number one.
...it wasn't that bad, BUT for the mere fact that they so horribly butchered it (and for the fact that the original cast which was comprised of actors who had 10 years to perfect their roles was abysmal) makes the film all the more worthy of being high up on a "Worst Movies of 2005" list.
Yuck.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 9:53pmIf that's the critic who wrote the Rent review on comingsoon.net, then that doesn't surprised me. Next to some crazy guy on Amazon.com, comingsoon.net gave Rent it's worst review - 3.5 out of 10. While I'm not all that surprised it didn't get any Golden Globe nominations, I still liked it. And everyone I saw it with loved it. Not liked it - loved it. And two of them are crazy-crazy Jesus freaks!

... well if they liked it, then perhaps you should ask yourself if it was nearly as provocative as it should have been.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 10:36pmMy biggest gripe with this man's bit on Rent is that he equates gentrication with pleasant. It's the complete opposite for me. Alphabet city was one of the coolest places to hang before it was gentrified.

Posted: 12/29/05 at 10:52pmMy friend e-mailed that list to me. I don't think rent was one of the worst movies of the year (although I also didn't think it was eerything that I had hoped it would be), but it definitely was better than Undiscovered. I had to sit through that movie with a friend and we were laughing so hard at the end (because it was soooo bad) that people were staring at us!

Now that you mention it, Evelyn, that's a good point. For the record, however, they were still VERY uncomfortable during the first "I'll Cover You," and one couldn't stand "La Vie Boheme" the first time - he literally was staring at the floor most of the time.
However, I did still think it could have been a lot more provocative than it was, but I still liked it. I couldn't really say weather or not it's one of the 20 worst, seeing as I haven't seen too many films this year. Before I saw Harry Potter, the last film I'd seen was War of the Worlds, which was only one of three movies I had seen all summer.

442namffug, did it ever occur to you that while the RENT OBC members had ten years to develop their characters, they also had numerous other theatrical projects and other things--like LIFE--to experience? Their sole focus for the last ten years was not to create characters that would be perfect in your eyes.
RENT was far from perfect. But it was undoubtedly good and enjoyable.
And as far as the never-ending reviewer comments that the cast is "too old"? Talk about below the belt. When you have no real argument, you throw out whatever trivial information imdb.com hands you, I suppose. RENT is not about a group of people with specific, defined ages--it's about a group of friends and one year in their lives. We know that Mimi is nineteen, but looks younger (neither of which is true about Rosario Dawson, despite critics' hailings--I think they were just happy to see the unnecessary Cat Scratch scenes), but we don't know the ages of the other cast memebers, so how can we say the actors are "too old"? They don't have their ages branded on their foreheads, and they are far from geriatric, and most importantly, they personify the characters, so what does their actual age matter?
As far as the movie's only promise being Rosario Dawson, "pff" is all that comes to mind. I found her to be one of, if not THE, weakest parts of the movie. If Daphne was out, then what about Marcy Harriel? What about Karmine Alers? What about Yassmin Alers? What about *any other seasoned musical theatre performer*??? This was stunt casting, regardless of what publications say, and it wasn't the best stunt casting I've ever seen, by far.
Does it really matter that NYC has changed since the 1989 depicted in the film? I don't know, does it matter that our technology is a little more advanced than that in "Gladiator"? This is another poor excuse for criticism. RENT was decidedly filmed with a 1989 NYC setting, so whether that setting is still present today is irrelevant and hardly a valid point for criticism.
Ugh. Reviewers with cheap shots tick me off. Especially at four in the morning.

jam_man, your friends sound like a couple of closet cases to me. Intimidated by scenes in a movie... yeah.

Well, one more than the other, but that's probably not too far from the truth.
We're trying to get them to see Brokeback, but I have a feeling that may not work.

I hestitantly went to see RENT again last night, and I must say, I like it much more than The Producers, and a lot more than when I first saw it. Since I knew what to expect, I didn't even acknowledge what was missing and it worked. There are only three scenes in the whole movie I thought could have been better:
1) Rent - the prison riot scene on the fire escapes look stupid.
2) No Day But Today - Mark, Collins and Angel suddenly walking around the corner was a bit weird, and seeming to instantly know what's happening at that moment was absurd...it could have worked a little better
3) What You Own - a really bad 80s video...easily the worst scene in the entire film.
