As I stated in the other thread:
OH MY F-ING GOD!!!! I seriously teared up when watching the trailer. It looks so beautiful. And just by the "Seasons of Love" song, I can tell that the soundtrack is going to be bigger and better than the cast recording (although it will always remain first in my heart). Everyone looks amazing and MY GOD I wish it was out now. Even my wife, who is not a musical theatre fan, got excited when I showed her the trailer. I can't believe it is almost here. YAY!!!!!!

Posted: 6/3/05 at 10:19pmI loved it. I've watched it 19 times so far, every time being close to tears just because it feels so real and so right, it like "Oh my God, this is finally happening, and it's being done wonderfully." I loved the trailor, it was really strong and it showed so many scenes. I thought "Seasons of Love" was the perfect song to put behind it and Traci's solo was amazing. I loved when she hit that high note and they showed scenes of people making really strong movements (like someone on stage (I couldn't make out exactly who it was) threw up there arm in a fist and other things to that extent were show), that's kind of random, but I just thought it was gorgeous. I thought they did a really good job putting in scenes that went with the music. Rosario looks like an amazing Mimi, and although Daphne will always be the best Mimi, I can see her being a close second. I loved when she was walking down the street, either on her way to or from work (I'm not sure) I can't say enough about the trailor. If you haven't seen it yet, than you don't know what you're missing. It made me even more excited about seeing this movie (if that was even possible). Is it November yet!?!? Elyse. No day but today.

I FINALLY got to see the trailer today, and I really liked it! I've seen the stage version 3 times, and will be seeing it a 4th time in late September, in NY...so it will nice to have the film come out that close to getting to see the stage version.
After seeing the trailer, it really made me think about the show in more 3 dimensional terms. Instead of having to wrap my mind around different sets for different scenes, it was nice to see entirely different places for each part. It will be great to see Angel's funeral, the characters actually walking down the street to a new location...and the Cat Scratch club in full effect.
I was really moved by the trailer...and I can't explain it other than to say, through the years, the music constantly evokes many feelings in me. I cry, I laugh...I do it all. And as much as I adore the music, part of what makes me laugh are some of the lyrics. They are as funny at times as they are touching. The cast looks as if they haven't aged at all, and I look forward to new arrangements for the musical, and YES, I am anxious to hear the dialogue that will be in place between songs.
The ongoing debate remains though...late 80's or early 90's?
I say early 90's, based on fashion...nobody wore caps like Collins until the 90's...Doc Martens were a fashion trend for punks in the 80's, but more global in the early 90's (as worn by Joanne), and let's talk about flannel...can we say grundge? Aside from fashion, there is the debate of technology. Yes, cell phones and e-mail existed in the late 80's for business people...but I do not think the idea of "a digital, virtual, interactive studio" was a thought in the minds of entrepeneurs at that time, only a vague concept.
Lyrical references also point towards early 90's. I.E. "Livin' in America at the end of the Millenium," which that is subjective, but I have always taken it to mean the last decade in the millenium. And another subjective tidbid..."Newt's lesbian sister?" This fact was not revealed until the time when Newt was the Speaker of the House, which if memory serves was during the early 90's.
There are my thoughts, but the trailer was awesome and my final thought is this: I think they should release the movie much sooner than November!

On the set, a lot of people were saying late 80's, but it seems like it's more important what general area it would be than the exact year.

"I think it's a lot more emotionally jarring if she doesn't tell him in person, but... meh. We'll see."
That's what I thought too. It'd be much more traumatic to learn his HIV status in his girlfriend's suicide note than her actually telling him before she kills herself. I mean, Roger does go into agoraphobic-depression for the next 7 months, so I thought the situation would have to be more dramatic.
I made my sister and brother watch it, and my sister (who I'm in the process of converting, she saw Rent for the first time in March) has already said she's seeing the movie the day it comes out.
She also said she tried to look for the trailer online herself, but all the search results kept leading to "some Broadway World message board" that didn't actually had the video, but everyone was talking about it. Heh. Hey lil' sis!

Posted: 6/4/05 at 2:52amI worked with Traci Thoms in a summer stock production of "Big River" years ago. What struck me is that she seems such a quiet, unobtrusive person most of the time--almost like a librarian--until she unleashes that big marvellous singing voice. I told her she would be a big star someday, and I hope "Rent" proves me right.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 7:20amhere's a thought i was afraid to voice, as i just adore adam.... but... he's not really a great actor. do you think he will translate well onscreen? some of those trailer shots of him seemed two-dimensional, whereas jesse and wilson were so alive. i think that besides mark, roger is the hardest character to portray because there is such a danger of making him pissed at the world, and then a dylan mckay who is somehow hot for mimi. i really hope he surprises people with his acting. i just thought about this because someone said "i hope he took ating classes for this one". that may be a valid wish...

Finally got the trailer to download.
How very exciting.
I was only looking forward to this film before because it's another movie musical but now I feel as if they might have done a good job! I'm not a big fan of Rent, despite having seen it three times, but here's hoping the movie is just one more musical project that continues to greenlight others. I think it's going to turn out really well.

"some of those trailer shots of him seemed two-dimensional..."
i honestly don't see how anyone can make an honest assessment of adam pascal's acting abilities in this film from snippets of film clips that change every 2 seconds.
maybe you're referring to the fact that most of the shots shown are of him either being pensive or serious, but even then you can't gauge someone's acting ability from these clips.
there is one of him smiling and clapping at Angel's back flip and one of him hugging and kissing Mimi, but then again you still can't gauge his acting abilities from these clips..they are for the most part muted, reaction shots save for the shots of the cast singing "Seasons of Love" interspersed throughout.

Posted: 6/4/05 at 9:47ami realize that - i saw him in slc and school of rock, as well as aida, and i just didn't think he was the best actor, that's all. this isn't a stab at adam; i was just thinking aloud.

I think I am going to be in the minority is saying I was really disapointed in the trailer. Now I admit I don't particularly like "RENT", but I found the trailer pretty bad.
Let me explain.
The trailer needs to sell the movie to the largest audience possible. The problem with RENT is not that it is good or bad or whatever but 80% of people would see the trailer and automatically dismiss it out of hand as a musical and they have not want to see it.
The trailer doesn't market itself well enough to grab as large a share as possible of the audience to go and at lest give the movie a try (something "Chicago" did real well). The trailer is really only going to appeal to those musical junkies who must likely going to see it to begin with (maybe it will attract a few individual fans of some of the more mainstream actors like Rosario and Jesse), but for the most part it will only attract those who like musicals, and know about the movie already.
And the problem is that crowd of people while very loyal and show be rewarded will not be enough to make the movie a 'hit'. RENT needs to attract a wider audience, and this trailer really doesn't do that.
Now we are lucky that we seem to be in a promising market at the moment for movie-musicals but it only takes one bad movie to kill of the franchise again. RENT was always going to be a tough cell since its cross-over appeal was never as big as "Chicago", "Phantom of the Opera" or "The Producers" to begin with.
I want to see more musicals appear on the silver screen, but we need to market the current crop coming to a theatre near you soon well enough to actually suceed and thus convince the studios to greenlight more down the line. And you cannot market a movie if the trailer puts off way to many people (and sadly the vast majority of people would dismiss it out of hand for being a musical and not give it a chance IF they are not conviced otherwise it would be worth seeing - "Chicago" did this, "Phantom" even though a much bigger brand name then "Chicago" didn't really do this (even though the trailers I thought where impressive) - and thus lead to a mediocre box office return.
I think "The Producers" proberly can succeed in marketing itself the same way "Chicago" did and suceed, but I feel this trailer really really hurt "RENT" even if us fanboys and girls liked it.

What I'm going to say is partially because I *want* to believe in him, but it's also partially because I DO. If Adam really had that much trouble acting, he wouldn't have pulled off Cabaret. He wasn't the best, but he did a damned good job, especially given the typical expectations of his abilities. I don't know what all he's done in the past couple of years to help, but his acting has certainly taken a good few leaps and bounds.
The last thing I saw him do on camera was Temptation - some of it was horrible, but in other parts I was kind of impressed with his acting chops... I wasn't sure how he'd be on screen. It seemed to be certain things on him that looked weird, like that implied sex scene he had with Alice Ripley, but that's the whole wimpy chemistry thing he does sometimes. After that, I was a little worried because I didn't think his film acting was going to be any good at all. As much as I make fun of him in School of Rock, that's not really a good thing to judge him by, either. But God, that thing cracks me up.
As for this two-dimensional idea, and about some of the other characters seeming more vibrant or alive in the trailer clips... for one, it's not all that fair to judge based on just a trailer, so I don't want to do *too* much of that, but I also think that's just... the way Adam played Roger. He was kind of like a volcano; quiet, lost, but would errupt with all of that hidden emotion at any point in time. Roger's broken - he's not going to have those qualities that the other characters display, until a certain point in the plot, I think. Roger doesn't *want* to open up to Mimi, and even if something like that turns out to be a fault in Adam's acting, I think it'll work, just like it did on stage.
I know I make jokes about his acting, and I probably did worry about how he'd be on camera. A lot of times what gets people about him is his charisma and presence, which may not be as evident on film. He isn't the best actor, and I'll be one of the first to say it. But, Roger is his baby. If there's anything he can do, and do beautifully, this is it. He also acts best through music, which I think is a huge part of the reason RENT worked so well for him. I have complete faith that he's not going to disappoint. He's going to kick ass up there; I know he can.

Very Well put Em.
What I am really excited about is Anthony. Recently Anthony has only been playing villains (guy in road trip and his character on SVU) in the mainstream arts (TV, FILM). With his acting abilities this could be a serious break-out role for him. I just hope that Mark's role as narrator transfers over to the film version, as thats where so much of his emotion is seen.
#147re: Rent Trailer: Thoughts?
Posted: 6/4/05 at 11:32amI *really* need to get my hands on some of Anthony's movies. I saw him in that one about the Jewish guy at the Catholic school (can't remember the name - I always confuse the right one with something else) when it was on TV, and recently re-watched A Beautiful Mind. David Searching was just apparently re-released, though, so I've got to go get that.

I think the trailer is amazing.
I posted on the IMDB.com website for the movie on their boards, responding to someone who thought "Seasons of Love" was the wrong song to use in the trailer, to which I whole-heartedly disagree, as "Seasons of Love" (to me) is the ultimate song to use for the trailer; it is the song from Rent, in my opinion. (I mean, there are others that are as equally recognizable, but the message behing "Seasons of Love" summarizes the entire theme and message of the play.)
I think the trailer also lets we Rent-fanatics know that the story is in good, able hands. In the Access Hollywood report on the movie, Idina Menzel said that they're stayed really true to the original production, which makes me very happy.
I simply cannot wait. November 11, 2005.
