*clears throat and steps up on pedestal*
I just wanted to put my thoughts out there. While Rent definitely has many dark points to its plot, and while it is very realistic and does not run from what society often deems unacceptable, Jonathon Larson also implemented an extremely strong theme of love. So, it is not necessarily wrong that the trailer would examine *this* theme. Which is a very strong theme, imho.
Also, it's probably good that they didn't start out with a dark trailer concentrating on AIDS and homosexuality because let's be honest, our society in general isn't very accepting of either. Just get them into the theatre, and then Jonathan's message will have a chance to shine.
*steps off pedestal*
P.S. Tracie looks sooooooooo cooooooooooooool in her solo part!!!! ahhhh! and did anyone else notice that Idina kissed like, 3 ppl in the trailer?? why was she acting all cutsie with Taye at the funeral? is that in the show? I don't remember ...

Since I'm too tired to read the topic... I think the trailer is beautiful. I was so skeptical when this all was starting to happen, and my response in general would just be "f*ck it, this isn't going to work." Adam said he was in, I still figured "f*ck it, this isn't going to work. It took a long time, and two nights of watching them shoot for me to convince myself that it really *was* going to work.
I had images in my head of what all of these things were going to look like. That trailer is so beautiful... and so.... right. I really can't wait for this movie; I cried all the way through that trailer.

I think that was Rosario.

"It looks like a generic music video."
I agree.
#80re: Rent Trailer: Thoughts?
Posted: 6/3/05 at 6:46pmI think that was Rosario, and originally, someone had said they thought Taye was laughing in that scene. I think he's *crying*.

You and me both. My mother and her boyfriend were looking at me like I was crazy.

Posted: 6/3/05 at 6:52pmI made me mother watch it. She was like "That's nice, honey. It looks.... great." I think she was just trying to shut me up.

I'm about 97% sure that he's crying. And that Rosario is comforting him.
Which is a really interesting plot point to think about.

I think she got sick of this whole thing when my homecoming for Spring break went something like:
"hi, honey, how was the movie set?"
I sit down at the kitchen table.
"um, how was it?"
I look around. "um....well."
My parents look at me funny.
I talked for an hour. I cried. I was such a mess, still. My mother has never seen RENT, and my father fell asleep through it. I was telling the wrong people. My mom promise she'd see it this summer. I hope she loves it... my heart will shatter if she doesn't.

Huh. I made my mom watch the trailer, too.
Quick question: who here has made one of their parents, siblings, or friends watch the trailer?

I think the trailer is absolutely gorgeous! Everyone I've shown it to has been amazed by it. People who have never seen Rent but have heard me talk about it were like, "Wow, that actually looks pretty cool. I'll go see that!" My friend's mother even started tearing up when she watched it! I think Rent has a great chance at being a hit.
My favorite moments:
-The shot of Maureen from behind during "OTM" when she raises her fist in the air.
-Adam on the rooftop singing "Glory"
-Of course the Angel backflip!
-During "Seasons of Love" when the lights fade up for the first time on the line of the cast in synch with a cymbal roll. I love, love, love that shot!
-The shot of Roger and April in the alley, which I'm assuming is just after April tells him they have AIDS. Beautifully phtographed.
-Jesse laying the rose on Angels casket.
-Angel taking off the wig.
-Mark and Roger embracing on the rooftop.
-And of course when the title fades in above the lineup. Talk about chills!
I have to say this is an amazingly well put together trailer. Thus far I have been extremely impressed with the enitre production. Well done!

TheActr- I LOVE your signature!
I had assumed that Roger and April were shooting up in the shot of the two of them in the alley.

See, that confuses me. Because "His girlfriend April left a note, saying 'we've got AIDS,' before killing herself in the bathroom."
So.... why would she tell him?

Posted: 6/3/05 at 7:18pmEmcee...I don't have my CDs with me to triple check...but isn't that line just part of the "talking-singing" that Mark does at the beginning? not actually part of a song? so maybe they changed that detail?
#95re: Rent Trailer: Thoughts?
Posted: 6/3/05 at 7:20pmThey could've changed it, I suppose. But yes, it's in the tune-ups. I think it's a lot more emotionally jarring if she doesn't tell him in person, but... meh. We'll see.
#96re: Rent Trailer: Thoughts?
Posted: 6/3/05 at 7:22pmI realize that Emcee, but I thought, since April is actually a character in the film, that maybe they changed it for dramatic affect. I didn't see anything that made it look like they were shooting up. But I don't know, it was just the impression I got from it.

I definitely made my Mom, 3 friends, and my brother watch it and the videos on the blog site at different times. They didn't seem quite as enthused as I was, but oh well.
Sometimes I think that we as performers/theatregoers get way too high-and-mighty when looking at a new show or movie. In my little town, we call it theatre-snobbery. Why do we go into a movie or show comparing it to something we know is amazing? In other words, why do we feel we have the right to judge an artistic work for others? I was with this girl at a conference and we were chatting about the POTO movie. She went crazy about how horrible it was and how everything should have been and how Christine should have been played by a 30 year old with a mature voice and blah blah blah. It struck me that most of us go into and come out of productions in a very critical manner.
I say, go in looking to be entertained. No more, no less.
