I've seen it twice also. The first time was with my Mom, Aunt, and cousin. My mom and aunt didn't know anything about it, and being from a small conservative town in FL, they were quite surprised. Haha. It was funny, but they loved it!
when i saw it there were a fair number of people who I didn't expect to even like musicals. When the clapping part of Seasons of Love started a group of people got everyone in the theatre to clap. It was really cool. My friends and I just looked around and said "Wait. We didn't start the clapping?"

Yeah, I was really suprised by people's reactions. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it....as they should! Haha.
The second time I saw it, I went to the first showing one morning and my friend and I were the only ones in the theatre so we belted the whole show. Ha. It was golden.
I saw my first viewing on Thanksgiving Night, and to my surprise it was PACKED. We chose to go that night because one, we didnt think there would be that many people and two, I swore I was the only Rent fan in my entire area lol.
I was happily proved wrong. It is nice when you have a crowd thats into a movie. It makes it more fun. We didnt have sing alongs or things like that..to my amazement no one even mooed. But the crowd was good, and my friend who is ANTI-musical, but dragged to the movie anyways by his girlfriend, came out really enjoying it..and he even bought the cd!

I went again on Friday and took my friend Tiera, who knew next to nothing about the show. All she really knew was from my Angel avatar which I use in another forum. Apparently, it interested her, 'cause she posted "I can't wait to see this movie to find out more about Angel." Anyway. . .she was completely absorbed from the very beginning. When Angel introduced himself to Collins, she actually gasped. Guess she didn't realize she was a drag queen when she saw the pictures. . .I thought it was pretty obvious, but she's a bit more. . .innocent in some ways than I. Anyway, she loved the movie so much that she wanted to go to the food court for an extra hour to talk about it and dragged her husband along and made him listen (even though he hadn't seen the film with us). She told him the whole story, and just about made him promise that he'd take her to Chicago to see the tour in April.
Where I am here in Canada, I was surprised to see that a lot of people were there every time I went, and most people I spoke to, Broadway lovers or not, fell in love with it and went right out to buy the movie soundtrack after. Some people were even singing along in the theaters the last time I saw it (a little annoying, but at least people now know what RENT is!) much better than, "oh yeah! Didn't they have the song in it like seasons of love or something? that's the best song ever i love rent!" and then start singing it like Rosario did in an interview, completely wrong
I saw it on Friday for the 4th time. When I see a movie, I stay until THE END, when the credits are through. At the start of the credits, the clean-up crew came in and, obviously, they can't start cleaning until everyone is out of the theater. Two of the crew left and one crew girl was left standing there. She stood there staring at me, like she was going to force me out of the theater. Psht! I don't think so.
I often stay 'til the end too, especially this one, with the songs over the credits. One time, the cleanup crew was waiting just inside the door and they were singing and dancing along too! :)
Awww it's leaving my neighborhood theatre, now where am I going to see it now!?
