I don't remember ever seeing a press release regarding a revival of PICNIC, however Telsey posted a casting notice for said production, so I guess it's happening in 2011...?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

This was announced some time ago.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Wouldn't a revival of Hot September be interesting in rep with it?

If I heard correctly, this will be going into the Helen Hayes in late November with a opening in mid-December.

Methinks this isn't going to happen.

Hmm, a casting notice has been placed on equity's website, so the production appears to be in the works.

Am I high, or was Ashley Judd attached to this at some point?

Ashley Judd starred in the 1994 revival of Picnic.

Love this play. The text is beautiful, and the characters are so deep. Love for a revival of this show.

Agreed. It's a lovely play that its popular movie version doesn't nearly do justice to. And I'm dying to see what Cromer does with it.

Terry Teachout already called David Cromer's production of Picnic "one of the best performances of anything -- and I mean anything, not just plays -- that I've seen in my life".

The NYT theater critic wasn't too amused.

For this revival, can we have Rondi Reed as Rosemary, please? Thank you.

I sincerely doubt the Broadway revival of Picnic will bear much resemblance to the one Cromer directed at Writer's Theatre in Glencoe, IL, since that space seats like 50 people.

I think Hayden Pantierre or whatever her name is is attached to this.

As Madge? That could be brilliant or disastrous.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I don't think Miss Panettiere would make that much of an impression as Madge. But who knows...I'm more curious about who they are going to cast as Flo.

Ebert's review of the movie is kind of funny.

"Director Joshua Logan, among the worst filmmakers of his time, spends so much footage on the picnic, you'd think this was a documentary: There are crying babies, laughing babies, frowning babies, three-legged races, pie-eating competitions, balloon drops, concerts and boy-girl contests."
Ebert on Picnic

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I just saw the film recently (it's part of The Kim Novak Collection DVD Box Set) and I have to say that watching it again I fell in love with it all over again, the story, the score and the performances. All first rate.

Well, I guess David Cromer could make the play live as something other than a batch of overheated cliches. We'll see.

I saw the pretty good 1994 Roundabout production. The leads were gorgeous and sort of dull, but the rest of the cast found all sorts of new things to play.

Who knew that Mrs. Potts, embodied by the late Anne Pitoniak, would steal the show?

It is a better play than most give it credit to be.

Also, the Shaw Festival had a major success with Picnic in about 2001. I didn't see it, but I understand it was the hit of the season.

The late great Anne Pitoniak. I'll never forget her in 'NIGHT MOTHER. But of course, no one who saw her in that role ever could forget her.

What ever happened to this? I did a search and couldn't come up with anything. Did it just sort of fizzle out? I recently read this play for class and would love to see what Cromer could do with it!

This was one of a half dozen projects that were announced last year with Cromer directing. They have all died.
