Riabko & Socha will be SPRING leads

"Playbill.com has learned that Canadian musician Kyle Riabko will succeed Tony nominee Jonathan Groff as Melchior in the Broadway cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

Spring ensemble member Alexandra Socha – who currently understudies Lea Michele, the show's original Wendla – will graduate to that role. Groff and Michele both exit the award-winning musical May 18; Riabko and Socha are expected to begin performances May 20.

No official announcement has been made about the casting of the new Spring stars."

Anyone know if Riabko is still going to open the tour in the fall? And will Hunter Parrish still be coming to Broadway?

I'll actually be seeing this with a group in July.

Interesting to see how they play it, because I saw the OBC. Comparison should be interesting...

Hah weird...I know another Canadian actor-singer was in talks to be Melchior either on tour or on Broadway. I'm sure both Kyle and Alexandra will be awesome!

I just googled her....there is a youtube vid of her, and a commment that mentions she just got a part in spring awakening....i know this isnt a reliable source, but seems pretty ironic...

...makes sense that she would be taking over in ensemble for Alex's usual chair which is open..

congratulations especially to socha!!! going this summer to see her and hopefully matt doyle will be understudying for melichor that day. i was hoping the mathch of doyle and socha for melichor and wendla. matt doyle was hoping they would offer him the replacment role, he was praying for it since i was at the stagedoor of lauren pritchards last day. i feel like socha is so used to being onstage with matt d doing the love scene and they joined the cast about 5 months apart. still mad they didnt replace melichor too with someone in the cast already. are they afraid to loose their great understudies and bump them up to better roles, it seems like it.

anyways just going to see the the show again without groff and michele, with the cast already but not happy with riabko as melichor.

Kyle is only suppose to be around until the tour. Hunter Parrish will be taking over...but there is no date known...so there might be understudies in August.

(This information was accurate as of 2 weeks ago, anyway. From several cast members.)

And it seems as Alice Lee is taking Alex's chair.

I think Socha is amazing in this role.

this is seriously excellent. cc1, 2/24/08. hope you get to see it!

they are both younger looking, and to me, sometimes a more believable set of hormone-throbbing teenagers. i mean alexandra is 17. anyway, excited for her, but at the same time, i've heard that after a week of wendla she's fried. i mean we don't want her voice to pull a brian. and now it's less special when i see her! but regardless i am excited for new blood. and i am going the 18th!

I love Kyle's songs on his website! And I've heard great things about Socha but have never been able to catch her when she's on for Wendla. Kyle looks older than Socha, though, I agree that a Socha/Matt Doyle pairing would have been amazing. I assume if Kyle is leaving for the tour and Hunter is not starting for a while that we may see that pairing often in the summer. Either way, congrats to both! This show has done an amazing job finding replacements.

Now that Doyle is playing Hanschen, I think you'll be seeing a lot more of Jesse Swenson as Melchior than you will Matt Doyle. If they put on for Melchior, Jesse would have to go on as Hanschen anyway. Makes sense just to put Jesse on as Melchior in the first place.

I've seen Jesse/Socha match up. 2x...I think it's amazing.

Matt has been assured of some Melchi time this summer...probably to cover the gap between Kyle and Hunter.

BUT...if Kyle doesnt' take the stage on the 20th (and that had been the word from the cast) then Jesse would be going on. I know the article says he takes over on the 20th, so we'll have to wait and see.
