Yes, you will Raul and move on to bigger, better things and someday maybe even something that's actually popular. If you need a comforting hug, I'm here.
You fell victim to what's known as the Streisand Syndrome. Both Nick Nolte and Lauren Bacall were Oscar-nominated for their work in Streisand movies and like you, were thought to be locks in their categories. When they didn't win, the looks on their faces were much like yours.
The lesson? Bask in the glow of well-deserved adulation but don't believe every last ounce of it because the award isn't yours until it's in your hand.

Um.. does he read this things? I doubt it, but if so... you were great in Company!
Is this in response to something? Is there a link? Do we really need yet another topic on this subject? (No.)
I'm with Cape Twirl - enough already.
I don't still have the link open, but Riedel wrote something in his column today about how his "spies" told him that Raúl was talking to Sondheim the day after the Tonys. He reportedly told Sondheim that he'd get over it, and Sondheim told him he wouldn't, and that after all, he's still not over West Side Story.
A lot of people say that Raúl has done it on his own, and that's not untrue, but Riedel has been out to hurt his reputation for years (which, frankly, makes him look like a jealous five-year-old). This is so silly.
What else has Riedel done/said about Raul aside from the whole Taboo incident?
I really don't remember specifics; it's not important. But if memory serves me correctly, he had what to say about not liking him when he was in Cabaret, too. And then when he spilled the beans about the Company performance, that made the show look bad. I dunno, to me, Riedel is like one an animal that does an incredible amount of damage by burrowing around, you know? He creates trouble via networks. And hey, obviously his blowing the Taboo thing out of proportion worked, because people are still convinced that it's going to ruin Raúl's career.
Wow, I'm actually more surprised that Sondheim still isn't over West Side Story.
It's been HALF A CENTURY.
Good God, man, "move on."

my friend's aunt is friends with Raul and visited him backstage at Company and she said he didn't expect to win...
who knows if that's true though. Still, I trust my friend/her aunt.
And that's what I'd call an actor insecurity-induced humble comment. The obligatory "nah, I'm not going to win." You don't get a look of shock and dejection like that from an actor who HONESTLY does not expect to win. By what I can judge, I think he thought this was his year -- what with all of the speculation. Even if you don't feel it, if you hear something enough times, you begin to believe it.
The Taboo incident was the first, but Riedel has been making snide comments about Raul every step of his career since and they've all been discussed on BWW. Do a search.
My friend of a friend is friend's with Raul and says that saying "I don't expect to win" is what *all* nominees say just because it's the polite thing to do, not necessarily because they actually think it.

yea it could have been like that but apparently this woman was like "Raul, you know you're not going to win. Groff or DHP is going to take it" and my friend claims he said something like yes I know.
still, with everyone saying it his hopes probably lifted a bit.
Well yeah I mean that goes along with you know when people ask are you competitive, or what they think their chances are, they all say "it's just an honor to be nominated." And I think it might have been Frank Langella who said every actor that says that is full of it...
Hey Best...sure it's been a while...but it's not just that one of the best musicals ever won no Tonys except Robbins' choreography...but that it lost everything to THE MUSIC MAN for God sakes. *shudder*
"Raul, you know you're not going to win.
Well, that's mean! Hah. And honestly, thinking that Groff had a snowball's chance in hell is just a joke. The rest of the nominees were in a completely different league.
Ugh. I wish The Music Man had just faded off into obscurity.
Aww, I like The Music Man. On sentimentality, though.
Does anyone have a picture of Raul during that loss? I remember watching it on TV going, "Wow! Talk about lack of subtlety."

Who in god's name calls it the Streisand Syndrome?
sometimes you just know these things as an actor - you learn to guage these things... during 3penny, a lot of people kept saying, "oh, you're going to be nominated" and I kept saying, "no - it's not going to happen"
and it didn't for many reasons - but I knew it wasn't going to happen.
he may have had that insight too.
in all, it doesn't matter for his career. he doesn't need it as a bargaining chip for getting a role, and he has become enough of a box office draw now (in the theater world). he should focus on auditioning for TV or something, and that would escalate his popularity. I think he would do well there.
I actually agree! As much as I'd hate for Broadway to lose him, he's proven he's a brilliant dramatic actor with the subtlety necessary for screen work. He's also "quirky" hot, which tends to do well there.
More movies would definitely be a bonus. Even better, a new Sondheim work - well, I can dream can't I?
I don't wanna talk about it. For several reasons. Several.

But you do, otherwise you wouldn't have posted at all?
"the award isn't yours until it's in your hand..."
We've had too many threads about this situation, but I agree with that statement.
