I honestly got the feeling that Riedel himself is the one trying to create backlash for Phillipa and Leslie or at least stoke some tiny flames that may be out there. This is the first I heard that any existed already (not that I'm as up on the gossip as I used to be, but these rumblings usually get out).



Personally, I think he gets upset when he can't single handedly tank a show despite his best efforts. When it works, he feels influential, but when it doesn't, it makes him see just how inconsequential he is.

Interestingly, Riedel has been upstaged quite a bit this year by Cindy Adams' trespassing on his turf. He has never done very well getting the true scoop because (a) he is considered a joke/clown/etc and (b) his column gets far less hits than many other places where a scoop can be profitably dropped.

Yeah this is the first time I've heard any controversy over the cast getting a share of the profits. I mean it's definitely possible but your proposition is likely as well. I mean, Riedel has wanted to bring the show down for a while. He's been trying his hardest to "create" backlash

Reidel does not take into account all of the road presenters who are Tony voters. The Hamilton tour (and subscription requirements) will be making them a bundle for years to come so it's in their own best interest to vote to make it an historical win.

In addition, those "depressed" Hamilton producers are depressed all the way to the bank. And back.

Did the road presenters formerly make up a higher percentage of voters? I remember people would always talk about their influence when shows like Millie and Spamalot used to win. But recently with the more unconventional picks like Once and Fun Home, it seems like there's definitely less of them.

And I really do hope the voters will be able to separate the hype and the backlash from Hamilton and just vote for it where it deserves it. Sweep years and years with backlash-influenced winners (Kinky Boots anyone?) are rarely looked upon fondly by history.
