Riedel's post-review Spiderman column

Posted: 2/9/11 at 11:29pmI love when people talk about how "unfair" the negative reviews are. As if it's unfair for critics to hate a show more than a particular patron. They write their own opinion, people. It's their job.

Posted: 2/10/11 at 12:06amwickedfan: what Ticketmaster did you check. I just checked February 23 and there are some seats in the rear side of the orchestra and in the back of the balcony. There is a very small scattering for priority seating for the $275, but even that's extremely rare. Less than 100 seats altogether, and for a 2000 seat theater that's damn good.

Posted: 2/10/11 at 12:39amIt is true, Ticketmaster has just under 100 seats open for Feb 22. It will be very interesting to see how the reviews effect the sales. I don't see it lasting through next January now. Reviews like this for a show without a big name usually means a quick death. Time will tell, maybe the audiences will keep flocking anyway.

Posted: 2/10/11 at 1:02amI just checked a few weeks in advance...awful lot of empty seats starting around March

Well that shouldn't mean anything because according to the Spiderman supporters, Broadway ticket sales are ALWAYS poor from January - June. They'll pick up in the Summer, just you wait!

Jordan, I think that goes without saying ... off topic I know, but who is that gorgeous guy???
Does Riedel's word about the advance ticket sales tanking have any merit? I mean, we know now that the weekly nut is WELL over 1 Million now (it's prolly closer to 1.3 or so) but I'm wondering if advance is really that bad.

As much as I hoped Spiderman would improve and it would prevail.. I think it seems pretty obvious that the show is a disaster.
Scott - as others have said - it is never accurate what one can see and what is actually available on ticketmaster. Like Mister Matt said - there are always house seats etc on hold. It also increases demand if a theatre looks sold out and tickets are harder to get. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Riedel has friends who work at tickemaster who have been able to see this info and tell him. Ha - don't most of us know a contact at a ticket agency? I know several myself.
Reviews do affect a run in my opinion; I was pretty much going to include this in my June visit but due to the overwhelmingly bad reviews I will not likely bother now. That's even if it is on.
Like Rose in Scream says... you can only hear the Richard Gere gerbil rumour so many times before you start to believe it.

I don't blame the critics one bit for posting reviews. It was way past time. The producers and Taymor are scamming the public by charging such exorbitant amounts for previews...if it is indeed a work in progress, though I doubt that much work is really being done to improve it.
And yes, Chris Rockway is DAMN fine!!

Here is where I do have inside information. Spider-Man is doing more than fine in ticket sales through April.
As for why I bring up Ticketmaster... What I object to is the blatant misrepresentations here. It's true that the box office might be holding back tickets (in fact, I know that they are, but not as many as you might suspect), but when someone writes that they went to Ticketmaster and checked out 23 February (randomly) and found approximately 600 seats when there is less than 100 showing on that date...
Why the need for falsehoods? What's the point? Don't like the show. Bash it on its artistic - or lack of artistic - merit, but so many of the comments here are based on false speculation, like Ms. Taymor or the producer's motives. Mr. Riedel even went so far as to say that Bono had abandoned the project. This is simply not true.
Hate Spider-Man. No problem, but don't lie about what you know or don't know.

Since you seem to love calling everyone else liars, I think it's only fair that you state and link your sources regarding the "more than fine" ticket sales.
Otherwise one might think you are just.....lying.

Here's my proof: following are screen captures of both the matinee and evening performances of 23 February. I would really like for someone here to show me the approximately 600 seats available on Ticketmaster. I understand that this doesn't represent the total seats available. This does represents the honesty of one poster.

Sorry about the initial bad links. I forgot how to embed images here. I tried to add pngs and it seems this site only wants jpgs. If you check back, you'll see that the links work now.
AND... Please someone tell me where they see 600 seats? I included both matinee and evening just incase I got it wrong. As you will see. It just isn't so. I am not a liar. My proof makes it clear other here are.

I guess my point is that you said:
Here is where I do have inside information. Spider-Man is doing more than fine in ticket sales through April.
But when I asked you, you showed me the house for 2 shows in February.
So, if that's your proof then you lied about this inside information regarding sales into April.
Which I guess makes you a pot. Or a kettle. Take your pick.

Scott, you're being such a briefer. I think tazber was asking for proof about your claim that the show is "more than fine in ticket sales through April." He even quoted you when he asked, like I just did. I'm pretty stupid, and even I understood that.
