Wow Riedel was one fire today. His crack about Impressionism at the end there was pretty funny.
"Goodbye Dolly" ... I love it! Make way for Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, Cousin Itt, Lurch, Thing, Pugsly and Wednesday!
I doubt Billy will walk away with best score, it will go to Next To Normal

I doubt N2N will win best score....
Never thought it was doing that poorly. It's been pretty much sold-out since it opened. But I guess we'll see how these reviews change it.
And sad to hear about "Desire..." I'm surprised considering it transfered with such stellar reviews, so obviously the Chicago critics were smoking something.

You mean another overproduced, underinspired kitsch musical hoping to rake in the tourist dollars? Lets hope the dissapointment of NINE TO FIVE marks the beginning of the end of mediocre musicals trying to cash in on lowest-common-denominator name recognition.
Amen, Borstal!!!! I cant believe people are cheering the demise of 9 to 5 and then acting excited for the freakin' Addams Family which is essentially the same thing. Whatever...
I never meant to sound like I was "excited" about Addams Family. Reidel in his column mentioned that Addams Family might go into the Marquis, so I just simply made a comment to make way for them. More like "out with the old, in the with new". But excited? About as excited as I am over SpiderMan ... NOT.
I'm upset. But I don't think we should expect it to close until we see this weeks grosses.
Another incorrect Riedel prediction: I'd say Liza is stiffer competition for Will Ferrel than Slava's Snowshow.

You completely missed the joke.
If Farrel's show wins, it will be the biggest Tony travesty since mack & Mabel was nominated for Best musical but not score - one of the best written for the theater
The omission of Gugino is astonishing as she is the best thing about the show which should be called "Desire Under The Rocks" as there is not a tree in sight.
Say what you will about Riedel as a person.
But I think he is cute as a button.
Thanks, WannaBe, I've been saying that for a while too. He's completely doable.
Having read the article I suppose I shouldn't shoot the messenger, but I have to wonder what's up with NYC critics: Dolly Parton has produced a VERY creditable original score on her first attempt - would everyone be happier if she'd fulfilled 'expectations' and produced a purely COUNTRY musical?
On top of that, 9-5 has the wonderful Allison Janney and such seasoned Broadway performers as Megan Hilty, Stephanie J Block, Marc Kudisch, Andy Karl and Kathy Fitzgerald.
If this show DOES close by Labor Day, please tell me (those who will be pleased) why this would constitute such a GOOD thing for Broadway?
Personally I'd be very disappointed if I didn't get the chance to see it again at the end of the year. Obviously I'd get over it because there's always new stuff to look forward to, but I'd worry about the message it would send out to genuinely talented people about the fickle nature of Broadway productions.
Call me melodramatic, that's just how I see things at present.

Which score is better? If "BE" wins for Score, it will be because of name only, in my opinion. Love the show, but the score is totally forgettable.
I think that 9 to 5 can stay open a year. Whether it will be a flop, I don't know. Look at Legally Blonde and Xanadu, both which lasted for more than a year yet are still considered flops.
but the score is totally forgettable.
I feel the same about N2N.

And that is what makes the world go round. Different tastes.
(and makes for great discussion)
I just dont think there is any comparison.

You cant compare the reviews that "Xanadu" received, to the ones that "9 to 5" received. "Xanadu" reviews were much better.
I dont think "9 To 5" will stay open for as long as "Xanadu" did, especially in this economic climate.
Billy's score is quite effective and touching and fun. It is exactly what it needs to be. If Elton John wanted to write a score of hits and pop ballads, he would have. It's a very serviceable score, and if it doesn't really pull a lot of focus from everything else in the show, it does its job to heighten moments and scenes while not feeling forced. If anything, "The Letter" is a beautiful moment of theatre.
