I have never been to this even before but I am making special trip to the city for it.

Questions: What items are for sale other than the autograph and picture tables? What is the price range for items?

Of course, I want to support BC/EFA, but after flying down, I am not sure how much $$ I'll have. I want to plan accordingly.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I hope this helps everybody. It's something I started working on last year and I'll save it as a Word document and edit it accordingly every year if you guys like it. Feel free to ask questions, add details, etc.

CELEB TABLE
The celeb table and photo booths are divided up by hour (actually 50-55 minutes because of the time needed for the change over). Starting today on the BC/EFA website, they will release the schedule of who is scheduled to appear when. Usually 10-15 celebs appear simultaneously at the celeb table. You pay a certain amount PER HOUR to go down the table and get as many autographs as you want, limited two items per celeb. You can bring your own items, buy the flea market poster and have it signed or they usually have slips of paper set up next to them if you don't have any items with you. At the same time, certain celebs will be removed briefly from the signing table if they've been requested for photos. (See section on photos below.) If you're in line for the signing table but somebody you want a pic with just got called to the photo booth, alert a BC/EFA volunteer and they will hold your spot in the line so you can go to the photo booth and then come back in line. If you are currently getting your stuff signed and someone is missing because they got called away to the photo booth, they will usually let you step aside and wait for them to come back. Absolutely no photos are allowed at the signing table. You can go as many times as you want throughout the day but you must re-pay for each group of celebs.

PHOTO BOOTH
The celebs are chosen for the photo booth based on popular request. You may be out of luck if someone you want a photo with doesn't have enough people asking for their photo. They only have under an hour for each group and while they try to accommodate all requests, they are obviously going to go with the most popular celebs if given the choice. A photo with a single celeb is usually $10 and they sometimes have VIP booths set up that are $40 and have either full casts or very famous people. If you want a combination that hasn't been pre-announced, you can ask a BC/EFA volunteer and it will be up to the celebs. One year, Anthony Rapp and Jesse L. Martin were both there and someone offered up $75 for a photo with both and that became the asking price. To request a celebrity, head over to the photo booth area about ten minutes before that hour's celebs are set to arrive and there will be somebody very noticeable tallying up requests. Then they'll call out the name of the celeb currently in the booth and put up a sign as well and everyone who requested them will get the chance to get their photo. You can get a picture with your own camera (a volunteer will take the pic) and, as of last year, they were still doing Polaroids for the same price but I'm not sure if that film still exists. With the Polaroids, you also get a cardboard frame and usually the celeb signs it too. Sometimes the celeb will sign something quickly at the photo booth but it's usually frowned up since the goal is to raise money.

GENERAL FLEA MARKET
Shubert Alley is also covered with booths for all of the shows and general theatre-related merchandise and games (e.g. Seth Rudetsky, Playbill, poster frames, raffles, etc.). The price of merchandise depends on what it is so there's no approximate price. Some places have playbills and baked goods and old costumes for as little as a quarter, some have signed posters and CDs for hundreds of dollars. My best advice is always to bring a lot of cash and to bring it in various denominations because in my experience, the ATMs and cash exchange places often have long lines and it's hard to use a credit card unless you're paying for an auction item. I usually split up where I'm storing my cash for the purposes of safety.

AUCTION
Various packages and expensive items are auctioned throughout the day in the center of Shubert Alley. There are pamphlets listing all of the auction items and the starting bids (if applicable). If you want to participate in the auction, just stand near there and raise your hand or your stick when the item comes up. It's just like a usual auction. There is also a silent auction where you write down your bid.

VARIOUS
The flea market is one Sunday a year at the end of September and it's rain or shine. If they're predicting rain, bring your umbrella and your rain boots. Prepare for a lot of crowding regardless of weather. The crowding is worst in the middle of the day and the celeb booth area is always the most congested. For bathrooms, my suggestion for any tourist in Times Square for anything is to go to the Marriott Marquis hotel lobby which is on the eighth floor (note this - it's not ground level). You can go up in the elevator and the bathrooms are on the right. They're clean, there isn't usually a line and it's a way to get out of the heat if it's hot out. Use water, sunscreen, etc. as needed depending on weather. A lot of times you will see Broadway celebs wandering around, including those who aren't part of the celeb table. If you ask them for a photo, some will ask you for a donation in return. Remember that this is about raising money for BC/EFA and AIDS research and not strictly about talking to Broadway actors. If you have the time, spend a lot of time at the merchandise booths because you never know what great finds you will find. Sometimes getting there early when they're just setting up is great because you get first peek and the crowds haven't swarmed yet. It's a great day, you always find great things and meet a lot of fellow theatre fans so enjoy yourself! re: Ripley, Fierstein, Batt, DeGarmo, Ashley And Many More Set For '23RD AN

Thanks for the information! I will have to think about what I want to spend my money on. But, I will be stepping out for awhile to see "Next to Normal." I'm excited.

I just reviewed the silent and live auction lists on the Broadway Cares website and was surprised to see nothing offered from some shows including Next to Normal, Rock of Ages and Hair. Does anyone know if this is the final list or if additional packages might be added? I would think packages from these shows (i.e. walk-on, backstage tour) could raise a lot of money.

I'm going to have to argue with this comment just a bit. I found credit card to be very easy when purchasing items. Each table does not have a credit card machine but if you pay by card they will give you a receipt with a stamp. Then you go to the credit card table where they will swipe your card for you. I think if you're buying something that's more than a few bucks it's important to use your card because you get a receipt. You don't get a receipt when you use cash and have nothing to include with your taxes (since donations are tax deductible). But I found cash to be easier at the photo booth.

I'm sure things will be added as we get closer to the day.

Eris, can actually use your credit card on everything, or just certain areas? I don't know why, but this sort of surprises me. I've worked on a huge yard sale with a group I volunteer with, and we could only take cash.

Also if you're hungry go for a piece of Cheesecake or a cup of coffee from Juniors too. The celebrity table is on their outdoor dining deck and the celeb "green room". Support them for supporting BCEFA.

Without knowing what organization you volunteer for I'd have to imagine that BC/EFA is a larger one. Also, this isn't a "grass roots" charity event in a random community but, rather, BC/EFA's biggest event of the year. It's run directly by BC/EFA as opposed to other organizations who have "satelites" all over the country.

In answer to your question I believe you can use your credit card on anything. If something is only a few bucks I wouldn't bother. I bought a pin at the Xanadu table last year for $5 and just handed over the cash. I, also, bought a marquee that was $50 and I put that on my card. As I said there, there is a table set up in the middle of 44th Street where people sat with a wireless credit card machine. You just hand over the paper you received at the table you were at and they charge the amount on the paper to your card. They'll mark it "paid" and you take the paper back to the table and get your item.

Good point. We are only a non profit animal rescue group in northwest New Jersey, so not a lot of people know about us. I guess this event would be different if all the money wasn't going to one organization or was just an ordinary yard sale.

I might have to go through the 12-12:50 line. I love Christopher Sieber, Pricilla Lopez, and Diana DeGarmo. I will also be seeing J. Robert Spencer that afternoon in "Next to Normal."

I'm not sure if each hour has enough people that I'm interested in to warrant going through the table. I'm thinking I might just hang around the photo booth and try to get pics with Karen Olivo & Matt Cavenaugh and Alice Ripley & J. Robert Spencer (if I can get them together; I know they're appearing in different slots). Hopefully more celebs join in.

DivaBrigadier, I was the one who offered the $75.00 for the photo with both Jesse L. Martin and Anthony Rapp---and it was worth every cent! Someone paid 150 to have his picture taken with Tim Burry, David Hyde Pierce and Christopher Sieber together, so that's where I got the idea for the one with Jesse and Anthony.

If there is a celeb that you want you picture with, offer more than the going rate---I did that last year with someone, and offered $20---and I got the picture. But I do budget for the photo booth accordingly. I can't wait to see who the special guests are! Maybe Hugh Jackman?

I offered more last year and got Matt Cavanaugh and Jenny Powers together as well as Kerry Butler and Tony Roberts. They weren't even going to ask Jenny to come to the photo booth because no one else had asked for her but I showed them the money and I got my picture.

Um....What's with the "Mystery Guest" crap at the autograph table? Even if they get Elizabeth Taylor, nobody's going to have anything for her to sign if they don't know who's going to be there.

They'll probably announce those people closer to the date. I was thinking about just bringing a blank piece of paper for everyone to sign, if I decide to do that line. I keep thinking about other things I remember people talking about, and I want to make sure I have enough money.

Sometimes people will call up and say "Hey, I want to do flea market" so they could be leaving space for that.

Magdalene, I'm sure the A-Rapp/Jesse pic was totally worth it. What a GREAT photo op! I figured Jude Law was too big to show up for this but so far, I am disappointed with no announcements for John Stamos, Julia Stiles, Cheyenne Jackson, Sienna Miller and any of the "God of Carnage" folks. Maybe they will be added in the future but at least a few of those news have the ability to pull in a LOT of money, IMO.

The year the Redgraves were there, Sir Ian McKellan was in town doing King Lear at BAM, and he called and offered to do the table/photo. He was a real sweetheart!

I've got my fingers crossed for a special with hugh Jackman/Daniel Craig...I'd do $75.00 for one with those two! I'm going to earmark my $$ just in case...
