The only way I could see it transferring if a non-for-profit company picked it up like Roundabout or MTC.
So I'm pretty sure they would want to record it now.

I doubt it'll transfer: the reviews, added together, were the most mixed you could imagine, and that doesn't bode well for audience interest.
All I want is a recording. Please. Please! Please.

Posted: 12/2/08 at 11:26pmWhy would a not for profit have to pick it up? It is also Sondheim and in the past, producers have wanted to be a part of his new shows. The economy may be a reason it may not get backing and transfer also. There is an interesting article in the Times about shows at The Public transferring to Broadway.

Posted: 12/2/08 at 11:28pmYou really think commercial producers would want to take a gamble on a new Sondheim production that received mixed reviews? Most commercial producers know Sondheim shows do not sell (unfortunately). I think it would be perfect for a Roundabout or MTC transfer.

I saw it. I liked it. I'm going to see it again next week. I want a cast album, but I don't care if it transfers to Broadway...kinda a small show.
Let's just look forward to a new Sondheim show that goes directly to Broadway!

Posted: 12/2/08 at 11:31pmI'm not holding me breath for this one. As much as I'd like it, I doubt anyone will fork over the money for this.

According to his Tony speech IIRC, he said he is working on something (or hinted on it at least). Maybe he mentioned it outright somewhere else.
And I agree that I don't think Road Show could transfer and make a profit with a commercial theatre.

Posted: 12/2/08 at 11:38pmI didn't hear anything, but like the others said above me..Sondheim had hinted about working on something new. I guess we can all look forward to that one! I just hope it doesn't start out off-broadway..nothing against OB...it just seems to hit too many rocks in the road when it goes that path.

Posted: 12/3/08 at 1:52amIt would have to change immensely - in its design elements. I wish they'd change the ensemble costumes at least.

Posted: 12/3/08 at 1:55amKeep in mind, as adored as he is, only one Sondheim show has ever recouped (Night Music).

Posted: 12/3/08 at 1:58am^ I'm pretty sure well knowledged posters on here have said before that COMPANY and INTO THE WOODS recouped. And SWEENEY recouped after its tour, etc.
#16re: Road show cast album
Posted: 12/3/08 at 1:59amNone of those productions recouped in their original Broadway runs.

COMPANY was always reported as a "hit" - it paid off while still running on Broadway. So did FORUM.
INTO THE WOODS and SWEENEY paid off with post-Braodway income.
It does not matter whether it pays off or makes money during the run or afterwards.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

It does not matter whether it pays off or makes money during the run or afterwards.
I think it does otherwise Jekyll and Hyde would be considered a hit and it's typically not.

Posted: 12/3/08 at 4:27pmAlso, apparently the producers for the Sweeney tour and OB production were different so if it made a profit later it doesn't change that money was lost earlier.
