That's nice that ROAD SHOW is being recorded, but how sad that a revised edition of BOUCE gets an album, but something as divine as THE VISIT couldn't have been preserved.
(Not to mention the travesty of the recent LA CAGE and 3PENNY OPERA revivals going unrecorded).

Posted: 1/2/09 at 10:40pmWell perhaps the idea of "The Visit" getting recorded was tossed around, but the producers were waiting for a more high profile venture? I don't think that show is "dead" just yet. It did make the Times Magazine top 10.

LA CAGE was a revival without any significant changes to the score. A new recording would be pointless with the original still available and about as good as we'll likely ever get.
ROAD SHOW has a number of changes to existing songs and a couple of new ones as well.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I would LOVE for this to be true. I enjoyed the production immensely and would love the chance to listen to the music more closely.

I second the lament of THE VISIT not being recorded. But it would have been rare for a production that size to get recorded. I imagine the producers were hoping for a New York life, and would consider a recording at that time. Too bad the Public production fell through, and that they never rescheduled it.
That said, I'm really hoping the ROAD SHOW recording happens.

Well let's not rule out A recording of The Visit. Someone might choose to fund a studio recording. You know?
But I hope Road Show gets recorded.

Posted: 1/18/09 at 11:01pmSo, tonight, at Stephen Sondheim's interview with Frank Rich at Lincoln Center, he said that Road Show should be getting a recording, and it should be recorded in February.

I'm well pleased though I was pretty sure it would be recorded (in the current climate of cast albums prob selling less than ever a Sondheim show is relatively a pretty solid choice I think--his major cast albums seem to be pretty steady sellers).

You and me both--maybe it's unfair but I just always see his character from Spin City who I *hated*

I loved Richard Kind in the role.
I was on the fence about Alexander Gemignani, I had seen him in a couple things and thought he was "promising." But found him mis-cast in ROAD SHOW...
... but then again, I might just be that I liked BOUNCE more.

Sweet!
Although I wish PS Classics was still using their old packaging style (the one used for 110 IN THE SHADE, ASSASSINS, etc.) Those are just beautiful things.

Such good news.
I've wanted to like BOUNCE, but just can't bring myself to do it. Most of the songs are great, but the whole piece is so unaffecting. And since I didn't get to see ROAD SHOW, I'm going to relish the chance to revisit this work in a hopefully more successful form.

Both BOUNCE and ROAD SHOW have their strengths and weaknesses. The 2nd Act of BOUNCE showed Sondheim and Prince at the top of their game (as did some sequences in Act One as well) but overall ROAD SHOW was better. It was tighter, faster and more focused on the two brothers. The downside is that much of what did work in BOUNCE was trimmed or altered.
In re-reading this thread I am again amused by posts of rumors heard from a friend of a friend of a cast member stating the recording would be done just after the show closed.
NEVER believe anything that is not substantiated by an official announcement. (I am still squelching rumors that CRY BABY was recorded and awaiting release. And No, Bryan, it isn't.)

Well we're getting one DG so just be patient :P. When does spring start in the US?
How long did it take for other Sondheim PC classics cast albums to be released after recording?
