I wonder when Brian D'Arcy James will return to play the King if ever.

Untrue. However, Groff is the only one eligible for the nomination [ie not Rory.] I do think the fact that he's leaving early will hurt his chance of being nominated."
When the show opened, I believe that was the case at least according to Riedel's column. So that's changed? I am aware that Groff is the only one eligible, but if the voters have had other opportunities to see the show, I can't imagine many of them would have passed up such a hot ticket.

@Cupid Boy 2
I'm not sure if anything changed, but my friend gets reserved house seats through his work on the show and he has to surrender all of the April/May tickets to Tony voters. Originally we were supposed to go in May and see it, but we had to change our reservations for June.

Although O'Malley is taking over, I can't help but think this will only be for a limited run with Groff coming back around Tony time. He's only out to film a movie, and there was an interview circulating a time back that said he's in until "about July"

It doesn't sound like he is/was interested in coming back, though. http://www.vulture.com/2016/01/hamilton-king-george-brian-darcy-james-jonathan-groff-andrew-rannells.html

Thanks for sharing that. I can see now why this does not bode well for Groff's award prospects.

I'm perplexed.
Are they gonna keep replacing whoever's King George?
If so, who's next?
Da da da dat da ...

What is the track record like for actors who depart still running new shows prior to the awards receiving a nomination?
Madeline Kahn was still nominated for On the Twentieth Century after departing the production.
Patti LuPone and Laura Benanti were both nominated for WOMEN ON THE VERGE months after that musical closed.

I think they actually plan to replace everyone as they leave... until the show closes.

Oh come on, haterobics! I don't even own the cast recording and I got that they were referencing a lyric!

Cupid Boy2, we had a whole thread about this. Riedel was mistaken (as usual) and Tony voters have been allowed to attend the show all year.

Judy Kuhn was also nominated for SHE LOVES ME, having left the production in the fall of '93.

Surrendering April/May tickets makes sense if a show is in previews now and will open before the Tony cutoff. I think Groff has a shot at a nomination.

People can certainly get nominated after leaving the show but Groff might have an issue leaving a lasting impression considering the tiny size of the role and the fact that Rory will probably be just as good.
However, supporting actor doesn't seem to be one of the heavily competitive categories this year so he could still sneak in easily.

Clearly I missed that thread, but I'm caught up to speed now. Thanks.

Mindhunter is a series for Netflix. No idea how many episodes but it's most likely 8 or more. I think he'll be filming for a few months. His contract was until July but he could've asked to let out early or had an out clause. The Netflix series is a huge career opportunity he couldn't pass up.

This a great choice. Rory, to me, is a consistently strong performer. I'm glad we are getting a chance to see him back onstage this season after all.

I'm seeing Hamilton for the second time in June, and I am so excited to see Rory. This is the perfect role for him! I am sad that Andrew didn't come back, but I am still excited. Jonathan WILL get nominated for a Tony, but he probably won't win now.

Although I loved BDJ as King George (I enjoyed his performance more than Groff's), it seems like they have already decided to go in a bit of a different direction with the role. Jonathan Groff, Andrew Rannells and Rory O'Malley are all of a similar age and type. Seems like they've decided to stay away from going back to BDJ's type.

I don't think he was ever going to win against Daveed.

If Leslie gets in the supporting category, no one will beat him. I honestly doubt Daveed will get a Tony nomination.

They have already announced Leslie is eligible for leading not supporting. Daveed will absolutely be nominated.

Oh good to know regarding Leslie. Since you don't know who will receive nominations, you probably shouldn't assume. They are both great in it!
