A collector sent me the unreleased final attempts by Roz to sing in this film (these are not the tracks that were released on CD in 2005). I had to synch them to the film.
She's horrible but fascinating to watch!

Interesting... looks more natural than what they eventually used.

Awful!
Wasn't there a story that Ethel Merman used to play them at parties and laugh?
All of Rosalind Russell's recorded tracks were included when the film's soundtrack was finally released on CD back in 2003.
Some People (Outtake)
Small World (Outtake)
You'll Never Get Away From Me (Outtake)
Everything's Coming Up Roses (Outtake)
Together Wherever We Go (Outtake)
Rose's Turn (Outtake)

And they are synched as extras in a couple of numbers on the DVD release aren't they? Or am I imagining it?
Her singing of this role is a total train wreck. Though Lisa Kirk's smooth-as-silk dubbing isn't the answer either.
The DVD release of the 1962 film-version of GYPSY only included the entire "Together" number that was cut. No footage of any musical number using Rosalind's original recordings.
The DVD release of the 1964 film-version of MY FAIR LADY included footage of the songs/numbers "Wouldn't it Be Loverly" and "Show Me" using Audrey Hepburn's original recorded tracks, so you might be confusing this DVD with the GYPSY one.
These tracks don't come from the CD - they're later attempts.
Should I do the other numbers, too, or is that too cruel?

Yes. That would be cruel. That would be very cruel.
Please do it as quickly as possible.

Slightly off-topic, but not too much, I hope. I've always felt that Russell's screen performance was underestimated because of the vocal problems. When she DOESN'T have to sing, I think her interpretation holds up pretty well. Of course, that's begging the point, because why bother doing Gypsy in the first place if Momma Rose has no range and can't carry a tune?
I personally find her Rose to be a second rate Auntie Mame...on crack. Natalie Wood gives the inspired performance in that film, not Russell (vocal problems or not).
Roz is great in the film, as she was in almost all her films. The problem for me is that she basically played Auntie Mame - this fun, crazy person everyone would love to have as a mom. And that is NOT who Mama Rose is. I never understood what the show was all about until I saw Tyne Daly do it. And I never appreciated "Rose's Turn" until I finally bought Merman's recording. I had always thought that the film ended on a surprisingly dead note - then I heard Merman do it, and I thought "Omigod - now I get it!"
I've actually only seen the TV version, but this is fascinating, anyway. She is pretty bad. Is Some People really that slow in the film? I feel like I'm watching Gypsy in slow-mo.

BroyFosse, you are right, I was thinking I had seen all of them because I had seen the cut "Together." And oy, how terrible to see THREE non-singers go after that song!
oooh, this makes me cringe
I think EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES should have been half Roz and half Kirk. Like ROSE'S TURN.
Now if only there was a way to sync up Lupone's actual SHOES with her feet. Be more interesting than the bedroom slippers.
Was that even suppose to be funny??
Yeah, Bert. Leave. Thanks. Bye.
Oh, wow. I think I passed a kidney stone when she sang, "And he was sayin' to me... ROSE!"
My eyes are stinging now.
God bless Broadway's own Lisa Kirk who did the dubbing. The original Bianca in Kiss Me Kate.
Roz sounds terrible on her outtakes. But I will say she sang the songs with a HELL of a lot more feeling than Kirk did. Kirk sounds like a lounge singer on her versions.

there really wasn't really difference between the original they're basicly the same.
The acting was Dull in this movie anyway I did not like changes at all and the Girl playing june looked like the girl playing baby june they didn't age her at all I like the
TV remake alot better. PS: why didn't merman play the role in the movie.
"the Girl playing june looked like the girl playing baby june they didn't age her at all I like the TV remake alot better."
Nice sentencesesses.
The girl playing June was Ann Jillian. The girl playing Baby June was Susanne Cupito (aka Morgan Brittany).
Oh, why bother.
I really don't care for the TV movie either. I think it's interesting that what is probably the best book musical in the history of Broadway has proved to be one of the hardest to successfully transfer to the screen.
I wish Bill Condon or Baz Luhrman adapted the material, simply because they wouldn't treat it as a relic (yes, I know Condon might wanna find an "excuse" to have them singing, but I love his screenplay for CHICAGO).
