Well, it caught on immediately with the series and won the original song Emmy.

The show is based on season 1 of the series, not season 2.

I am and it's just as hilarious and fun and exciting as seeing it live, and as much as I wanted Jellicle Ball to win best orchestrations at the TONYs, I completely understand why this won instead.

Gave this a listen having not seen it live yet. For what it's worth, SCHMIGADOON! feels like the ice cream sundae of this last musical season. A different confection than TWO STRANGERS, but just as sweet yet unappetizing.

Mixing is quite good and the orchestra sounds swell. Listen to the very end of the exit music for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it "Welcome to Schmicago" reference :)

The songs from the series mostly hold up here, with the exception of one familiar tune about reproduction, which is a bit less "dirty" and waits to go in for the kill (the punchline). In the series that same song — with slightly different lyrics — had me howling from the first word.

The new songs slot in well enough and provide even more opportunity for spoof: an anti-"Marry the Man Today," a soft, jaunty swing about love's sweet delicacies, a "You'll Never Walk Alone" knockoff set at a funeral. Though brief, "The Picnic Basket Auction" got me thinking of "A Real Nice Clambake," while "I'm Engaged" feels a lot like "I'm In Love With a Wonderful Guy."

MVPs of the record for me are Sara Chase, a crystal-clear Max Clayton, Izzy McCalla, and Ana Gasteyer, who makes of "Tribulation" the rousing standout it wasn't onscreen.

Maulik Pancholy was a surprisingly good new addition, bringing a slightly youthful take to the town reverend that's still quite the far cry from Baljeet. You can hear his solid rapport with Brad Oscar's mayor.

Protect Ayaan Diop at all costs. In my head I already hear the collective "awww"s at the Nederlander.

My main qualm, unfortunately, lies with Alex "Keep Makin' Farts on TV" Brightman. I've liked him in everything I've seen him in, but Josh seems even more unlikable than in the series... is it Alex or the writing? Seems to make his second-act arc less effective.

Good album overall though. Could see this running to the winter holidays then pulling the plug.

I just saw the show for the first time last week, and I actually had the same thought. While I get that he's supposed to be a wet blanket, I found Alex to be lacking the charm that Keegan-Michael Key brought to the role in the tv series. It made it hard to believe that the teacher would really fall for him or to understand what Melissa sees in him - he came off as just a dud of a guy.

I also didn't love Sara's take on Melissa - she delivered most of her lines in this sort of artificial, affected manner that made some of the humor go right past the audience. Lines that I always laugh at when Cecily Strong delivers them in the tv series fell completely flat.

I would love to see the show with different leads, because I loved it otherwise - the production design was so wonderful and I love the score. McKenzie Kurtz deserved a Tony nomination, and Isabelle McCalla is an absolute star - maybe the best triple threat since Sutton Foster.

I disagree with "Ana Gasteyer, who makes of "Tribulation" the rousing standout it wasn't onscreen." the number on screen is quite dynamic and Kristin makes a meal out of it, and at least from the performance that they did in Jimmy Fallon the number seems quite boring on stage with no change in the scenery and Ana not really doing much other than park and bark.

Other than that I agree with the comment, and I do miss the original lyrics to "Vagina".

Musical theater gays don't gag over pop girlies, they gag over Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone.

"

How are they supposed to ‘change the scenery’ when there isn’t any on a talk show performance? 🤣

Agreed. She does a little turn and vibrato at the end of the phrase "no way to liiive" around 1:50 that scratches something so satisfying in my ear. I can't get enough.
