James D. Stern, the Tony-winning producer of 'The Producers' and 'Hairspray' has acquired the stage rights to the 2012 Oscar-winning film.

“I’ve thought Silver Linings Playbook would make a perfect musical since it was first released,” Stern tells THR. “I am thrilled to now be moving ahead with wonderful creative writers to open this show on Broadway.”

I occasionally think In 10 years I'll wake up and think "what musical from a movie do I want to see today?"

Because that's going to be the only thing left. Plus Phantom.

Not every movie needs to be a musical.

Not every movie needs to be a musical.

Not every.....you get it.

These announcements are always so silly when they don't include a composer/lyricist/bookwriter.

This isn't like, a super exciting project to me, but my first thought was Ciara Renée in the Jennifer Lawrence role would be inspired casting
They/them. "Get up the nerve to be all you deserve to be."

It's honestly a phenomenal movie but WHY? I could see it as a play with a dance sequence or two or three thrown in, but an entire musical?

I know I'm in the minority, but I found this film to be mind-numbingly boring. I can't imagine it making an interesting musical.

They're unprepared or it's probably early early in the works, so they wanted to excite people with this announcement I'm assuming.

Agreed.

It's a nonsense press release that tells us nothing other than he acquired the rights. For him (or the HR writer) to imply that he had anything to do with the creative processes of either Hairspray or The Producers other than sign checks is ridiculous and comes direct from the Ken Davenport School of Producing.

I wonder if they’re making it a musical because of the dance at the end? That would be silly if that’s the ONLY reason for it to be a musical. Play? Yes, could totally work with a dance number thrown in there. But not a musical.

To be honest some of my favorite musicals from the past decade have been adapted from movies that I didn't necessarily think would make good musicals (The Band's Visit, Waitress, Bring It On) so I'm not immediately turned off by this. Cautiously optimistic pending the announcement of the creative team.

I know!! I feel like a stage production with some dance sequences would work really well. They had that bit of dance practice moments too, but I'm surprised this was placed on the table to become a musical.
