My impression is that it will pick up a few Tony noms, pray for the best, run a little while and be done by Labor Day.
it should do well through the summer. I'll give it a year.
I'd give it a much longer run. Most of these reviews are fantastic!

I really liked the show, but these reviews are mostly what I expected. It's no Book of Mormon, but it's lots of fun and the cast is great, and that's what the reviews reflect. if anything, Sutton and Patina are going to be neck-and-neck. Neither is a done deal. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but Patina's edge by giving a breakout newcomer performance makes her about about equal with Sutton, even though Sutton got slightly better reviews.
These are exactly the kind of mixed to positive reviews everyone predicted it would get. They got plenty of pull quotes, and the tourists will eat this up.
And I wouldn't be handing Sutton Foster the Tony just yet. Ask previous winner Tonya Pinkins, who got rave reviews and the backing of the Times what happened when she went up against a relatively new performer in a breakout role in a show that received mixed reviews.
looks like we've got two pretty leading ladies (sutton & miller) who just don't have the depth to pull off their characters. having seen both shows, i'd say the positive reviews are for their showmanship on stage filled with bright smiles & pearly whites, and of course great voices. but unfortunately, neither has the depth they need to really do their characters justice. we need more ole broad patti lupone types on the broadway stage. less about looks, more about impassioned, deep, get-down-dirty performances.
Why is everyone acting like this show has no chance in hell...? It got fine reviews. Not great, not horrible. Fine. And, quite frankly, that's all it needs. Word of mouth is phenomenal and sales are great, so I hear. I predict it'll make its money back and run quite a while. The marketing team looks like they really know what they're doing. I think it has a legitimate shot at a few Tonys. It's the closest thing to a threat that BOOK OF MORMON will face for Best Musical, I think.

I agree with Wickedrocks that (at least as far as what's opened this spring), this show is second behind Mormon.
adamgreer, while I agree with your assessment, I'd hardly call Idina Menzel a "relatively new performer" at the time she won the Tony for WICKED, especially in comparison to Miller's pedigree this year.
Fair enough, but it was definitely her breakout role.
And I'm not saying whether or not she should have won that year, just that the situations are eerily similar, right down to Donna Murphy being a likely nominee as well.

I'm pretty sure Idina Menzel got fairly unanimous raves as well...
"The show is steeped in talent. There is, for starters, Idina Menzel, the vulpine vocal powerhouse who created the role of the omnisexual Maureen in 'Rent' and who here brings her larynx of steel to the role of Glinda's dearest rival, Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West." - NY Times
"Idina Menzel's Elphaba is a powerfully human sorceress, particularly when delivering haunting new songs such as No Good Deed and I'm Not That Girl." - USA Today
"She performs with an appealing simplicity, and her powerful voice is perfectly suited to the ardent, emotional anthems that pepper the score. Granted, the songs tend to sound similar, but the metallic edge in Menzel's voice cuts through the synthesizer-heavy orchestrations with an ease and electricity that inspires shivers." - Variety
"In the tougher role of Elphaba, Idina Menzel is possibly even better, a mix of vulnerability and feminist passion, with a rock voice to raise the roof." - Time
"Idina Menzell, who wowed us in “Rent,” is doing the same now. Elphaba is an extremely challenging role but Menzell sets the stage on fire, convincingly switching from good to evil with chilling ease." - NY1
Not to imply that any of the other women were undeserving.

Wouldn't it be funny if the votes were split and Donna ended up winning...

That would be...strange.
PS, love the avatar, adamgreer!

She did get excellent reviews, but not nearly at the same level as Pinkins. Pinkins' performance remains the single best performance I've ever seen onstage. Brilliant doesn't even begin to cover it.
Donthatecongratulate: Exactly how much depth is there to Reno Sweeney? Yes, she's a very rich character that actresses can have a great deal of fun with, but is there a lot TO her? I mean, she's certainly not as deep as Rose, Dot, Little Edie, or Julie Jordan. Hell, she's not as deep as Mame or Charity Hope Valentine. She's got a great deal of sass, spunk, sex and charm and that makes for a very winning character, but not exactly with a lot of meat.
From what I understand, Sutton does a great job with the part. And the worst thing I've read about Patina Miller in the part is that she's too glamorous to be slumming like her character is for the first 20 minutes. The rest of the show (including the more heartfelt scenes) she apparently pulls off with ease. Even there, though, Miller doesn't exactly have a role in a production that calls for her to get "down and dirty." If I was seeing a production of Man of La Mancha and the Aldonza was more concerned with her nail polish than doing the part justice then I might find some reason to your logic. Otherwise, I think that you're arguing an empty case.

Only if she accepts the award dressed in that horrible Dibbyk outfit she has to wear.
In 2004 you had Chenoweth, Murphy and Pinkins who all got raves and were considered Tony front-runners when their shows opened. Murphy took the Outer Critics and the Drama Desk Awards, then it seemed like the Tony would go to Pinkins and at the last minute Menzel suddenly got a lot of buzz and ended up winning. It certainly didn't hurt that she was in a huge hit. And then there was Stephanie D'Abruzzo who was fantastic but unfortunately didn't stand a chance against the other nominees.
This year it's between Foster and Miller. Both got overall very good personal reviews and are in mostly well-reviewed shows (though I think in the end Anything Goes will have more positive reviews than Sister Act). The other potential nominees are/were in lackluster shows (Dacal, Leavel, Murphy and Scott) and their show just doesn't allow them to show off the way Foster and Miller get to (Hemingway).
The show is gonna be a hit...big names on the bill (Goldberg, and the title) decent reviews (on par with WICKED) and some stand out stars (Patina, Clark)
And just IMO, I think Menzel was a bit better then Pinkins...only by the smallest margin though. Both ladies are true fantastic diva's who are absolutely stellar in their own ways :)
Has Brently given his rating yet?
Who's Brently?!
Sorry I typed to quickly haha I mean Brantley
Ops didnt catch that. Thanks!
I think this will enjoy a good long run, if ticket sales start to slump Whoopi can come in as Mother Superior for a while.
Where's the Word of Mouth review? Those are always hilarious.
