Mark and Chita...I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree.
I don't think SA is a good idea for a show, nor the others that I listed. Have I seen them? No. Will I? No. I simply think they aren't good ideas for musicals. But you guys may think they're great. This is where we agree to disagree.
So what if people are criticizing a show they haven't seen? Are they not allowed to do it? It's their opinion, based on whatever knowledge (albeit large or small) they have of that show.
Thankfully we live in a place where people are allowed to have our own opinions and express them freely, without having to be persecuted because of them.
Sorry, you won't go and see it because you don't think it's a good idea? If id gone with that attitude I wouldn't have seen alot of shows that have become favourites of mine.
I personally like to give every show a chance and just go and try and enjoy it and if I don't, well then I won't see it again.
I saw La Cage in London in December last year knowing NOTHING apart from the fact it had the song I am What I am in it. I have since seen it a further 2 times and it is one of my favourite shows now.
You simply can't have a valid opinion against a show if you know nothing about it. Simple as.
That's really crazy to me. Almost every musical I hear of I stop and think "What!? That's a musical?" Then I see them and end up loving most of them. It's sad to me that someone who considers themselves a fan of Broadway musicals would limit themselves so severely. It's very close minded.

Again, it's all a matter of opinion. We can argue about this until the cows come home, but it IS a matter of opinion. Opinions are right or wrong...they just...are.
Sorry you think I'm closed minded, CatsNY, but there are some musicals (and plays) that simply don't interest me, for whatever reason. I don't like every single play or musical out there, regardless of the fact that I AM a fan of Broadway. (Are there no shows that you dislike?)
I just happen to think that bringing this show to Broadway is a bad ides, especially if they're basing it off the movie (which I thought was horrible). I feel the same way about CATS. But again...it's MY opinion. I'm not asking for it to be yours, just simply stating my opinion.
I'm sorry if you can't recognize that people have different tastes and opinions when it comes to Broadways shows (let alone life!). It's this view of life that reminds me of how many close-minded people there truly are.
I'm done. Feel free to read, delete, add to, criticize, whatever...

Yeah but it's a good idea to bring it to Broadway. You can say it's an opinion, but in this case your opinion is wrong.
(Are there no shows that you dislike?)
Of course, but the difference is that I found that out after I saw them. I gave them a chance. There are plenty of shows I thought for sure that I'd dislike and I ended up loving them. You're limiting yourself. That's all I'm trying to say.

I understand, CatsNY. And I'm fine with my decisions to like/ dislike/ limit myself.
Theatre Dork...there are no "wrong" opinions. Opinions can't be right or wrong...they just are...
"(Are there no shows that you dislike?)"
Libby, its alright to dislike a show after you have seen it, but to have not seen/heard it you really arn't in the position to pass judgement like you are making.
"Opinions can't be right or wrong...they just are..."
And, as such, they can be...
uninformed,
ill-informed,
invalid
and/or
worthless.
If you want people to take an interest in your opinion you need to substantiate with evidence and reason. If you can't substantiate it then your opinion will necessarily fall into one of the categories above.

I was stating my opinion...not trying to sway anyone else's opinion. I don't care if you like it, hate it, or find it worthless. Just using this forum to express my opinion. Period.
So why express your opinion if you don't care what people think of it?

How do you know they are bad ideas for musicals? You said you haven't seen them. And sure you can say you don't like them without seeing them but no one will care about your opinion because you haven't seen the show, i doubt you've even listened to the music or seen videos. What if Ben Brantley reviewed a show he hadn't seen? No one would trust his opinion because it's not a legitimate opinion.

Whether or not you think it is a good musical is beside the point, the show is making money in London right now and sow bringing it to broadway is a good idea to keep the business going. People will go see the show in America because it is a very well name movie, and Whoopi Goldberg is practically a brand name, and with her name attached to the show based on a movie she was, people will be interested to see. If you don't think the show itself is a good idea, that's fine, you seem set in your opinion and there's no need for me to argue that. But economically and financially speaking, it IS a good idea to bring it to broadway.

This is the point I was trying to make, IfYouCan.
The question was "what changes should be made...?", and I responded.
End of story.
